Now that I got your attention, I'm hoping to get some adult responses.
A man (who has the mental abilities of an 10 year old) has no family. They all died. His friend's family moved into his house and is living off of him. I mean living off of him. He also has a few other people living off of him too. I mean $$$, computers, large LCD TVs (more than one), etc. You get the point. This man probably feels he need to be kind so he is not alone. Again, there is no family.
I'm related (to the family this is living off of him in his house). He considers me his "family" too. I live out of state, and get's nothing from him at all (Christmas gift-value less than $100) when I come to visit. That's all ever. Don't need it. I'm ok.
On the flip side, if he did not have money, or if the roles were reverse, I'm sure no one would give the time of day.
He spends $20K a month (on him and everyone a month). No joke.
NOW. There is talk of selling his stocks. The stocks in one company that his (dead) mother bought years ago. The stocks suck now compare to 3-4 years ago. Today it's worth 36 million dollars. The selling process will take about 6 months.
There is talk of him giving each "family" one million dollars. If that was the case, he would only be out $5-$7 million. Depends on if he count spouses. I'm consider "family." No big deal. He still got $30 more that he will "save up." Again, this guy (mid 40s) has the brain capacity of a 10 year old. His lawyer handles things for him. All he get's is a check each month.
I do well. Working and have my own thing. My own cars, my own house. We all love money. A new Daytona Charger looks good. But there is something wrong with this. Wife love to have it. I'm sure everyone would, especially the "family" that is living off of him now. If I could, I would tell him NO. Then eveyone would hate me. I would bet those "friends" who is consider as "family" would want to keep me quiet. Everyone who is "looking out for him" telling him what he should or should not do is living off of him. Honestly, NO ONE has a job. Actaully only one even attempts to work. I think selling his stocks (last pot of $$$) is a big mistake.
On the flip side, if he does not take care of them, they will hit me up. Again, no one works or have any money (it's really that sad). So I'm greatful for him taking care of them.
I'm not sure if I have a question, or just a bitch session.
Has anyone been in similar situation where is right to be the "bad guy?"

Me... I'd just stay out of it. Maintain your friendship with the guy, but mind your own business. It is very difficult to do -- especially when people are taking advantage of him. But, unless he is retarded* or something, it is his choice to give away or keep his assets as he choses; even if he is making stupid decisions -- his choice.
*That sounds cold -- but that is exactly what I mean -- if he is incapable of making decisions because of a serious handicap (more serious than just plain stupidity)!

One more caveat -- If he asks for you advise, you may give it, but proceed with caution. Often when people ask for advise, what they really want is affirmation of the decisions that have already made. If you can't do that, you may find that they really weren't seeking your advise.
(humorous note: you can see this on this forum all the time. Someone asks "What do you think about XXX that I did to my car". If you indicate that you don't approve... you find that they really didn't want you opinion -- they wanted affirmation.)

I don't agree with taking someone's money and i also agree that you should stay out..
However with that being said... he can't take it to the grave with him.. and if he does.. the government will soak it up. Chances are he'll will it to the family anyways.
If you stay out of the day to day drama and run your life the way you see fit and you get a check in the mail, then cash it.. it was a genuine gift. If you go to him and "scandal" the money... that is wrong...
hope i made sense of what i'm thinking ...

Sounds like this lawyer needs the boot if he's aware this is all going on.

If the guy is really incompetent, you could seek to have the state declare him as such. I'm not sure, but I assume they would name someone his guardian.
But believe me, nobody (the guy -- the family) nobody will feel any luv for you if you choose this route.
And -- if the lawyer is handling things and the guy is just getting a check each month. Are you sure he actually has the ability to sell his assets -- or is it "just talk". Perhaps the guy's family did already make the lawyer a trustee of the mans assets before their death. (My mom and dad did that for a handicapped brother of mine)
Which brings me back to my original thought -- steer clear.

I could not agree more.
My Great Aunt and Uncle died within 4 months of eachother. My familiy and I were very close to them as my Grandparents had died when I was very young.
My Great Aunt and Uncle had a lot of money and one of our other "family" members was the executress of the estate. To this day I have never seen such childish behavior by grown people.
I decided to stay out of it to an extent. I know a lot of the money they had they wanted to go to the church, and it did.
Like NYT said - there is a special place in hell dedicated to those to take advantage of the weak. They may live a little easier now at the expense of someone else, but it will, I strongly believe, catch up to them at some point.
Do what's right in your heart.

Can't agree with mywhitecharger more. Going through the same stuff with my family right now. My parents and my wife's mother and step-father were all killed in a tractor trailer accident at the end of October. Dealing with goofy stuff with my wife's sister (who is the co-executor of my wife's parents Trust). My wife and I were going to be the Plan Administrators for the wrongful death suits...until my wife's sister thought she should do it. To keep my wife and I out of having a "conflict of interest" (according to my wife's sister), I am going to talk to my brother to take on the role of Plan Administrator for our parents side of the suits. This way, he can yell and scream at her...and it won't affect my wife's relationship with her sister. So...if you have the opportunity to stay out of it...I would leave it alone. If you are concerned about the money...when you get the check, put it in a money market account and leave it there.

Lot's of good advise, I think I just need to hear it. I tend not to discuss this with anyone, where as others are broadcasting it like the news "hey.... I may get a million dollars." Using this to post to respond:
- I don't know the exact condition he has. But he can not get a drivers license. His distance aunt in Canada found out his mom died, and decided to "claim him." Or more like "claim him money." He didn't want any part of it. There is nothing "wrong" with him. And there there's something not right. It's not irresponsible or foolish. It's like the mind hasn't fully grown up.
- As for the lawyer, it's not their "original" lawyer. He died too. I guess when one get's old, eveyone starts to "die." It's the lawyer's firm handling things. So he just became a case file, instead of a "family friend" that look after his best interest.
- Yes, he has the ability to sell assets and borrow money if he wishes.

Another way to look at things is that by the way it sounds the "family" will not stop and they will spend all of his money. You can take a million or so from him. Properly invest it... make tons of money off of it. Then ten years from now... when he is broke and doesn't have any more money and the "family" moves on.. you can invite him into your house or maybe buy him a nice townhouse, or pay for him to go into a nice place to care for him. and then give him some money as he is getting now.
you have 1 million dollars for however long it takes for him to go broke... 10 -15 years.... all of your financial problems should be over... meanwhile never touching the million... hell you could give it back to him 10-15 years down the road.
in this example... your the hero

WHere the heck is the lawyer and the state? If he is not competant to make these decision, he should not be making them? SHeeesh, I have a spare room, he can come stay with us in Vegas. We'll charger him $300 a month for room and board. But if he is allergic to dogs or cats he might sneeze alot so you warn him first.

your family is going to burn in hell. and the end is right around the corner for them. sooner or later the money is going to stop and they will be flat on their a$$'es. they sound like a bunch of white trash to me. i would stay out of it. BUT it sounds like you feel bad for the guy and what your family is doing to him. this is just me but i would call his lawyer and drop a dime on your family as to want they are doing. do you have any respect for them after seeing what they are doing to this guy? they dont respect him or them self's!!! you have a job/they dont. you have a heart from what i see in your post/they dont. they are garbage/you are at war with your self as to what to do. WHO cares if they are mad at you-i'd do the right thing and call some one. [the state-his lawyer-the police] i think thats the right thing. BUT it's up to you to do what you fell is right. have you tryed to talk to your family and tell them what you think of their action's.

For the OP, you already know what's right and that's clear by your post. However I can understand the frustration. Just try to forget about it, really.
For the other guy, what a sad story and turn of events. My dad's family came from Ashe County, N.C. and started there before the revolutionary war. I've never been there, but want to go back and do some genealogy research. I read some of the newspapers from there now and then.

Ok... adding to the hijack... I have done genealogy research over the last 3 years and have subscribed to ancestry.com. If you would like some help, I can look up some stuff for you. Please PM me.
When I started my genealogy research, I had only my great grandparents to start with... using the different sites I have been able to go back 3 generations from that....Very cool stuff!!
Getting back on topic... NoHemi... I understand your dilema... if you do nothing.. then your relatives are not knocking at your door.
But I have to say.. one of my children is a special needs child, if I had not left a will to specify a guardian I would hope that someone would step in and petition a court to do so to protect her....... Since you are not looking to get anything... you could be that someone...
That would mean that you would have to be able to tell you family members to become self-sufficient and not look to you... very difficult, but IMO.... something that you need to do...
Good Luck.. Not an easy situation... but please feel free to PM me with genealogy help... I love this stuff as a hobby!!

It's one of those where one complains about how ther other is taking advantage of this guy. And at the same time, they are doing the same thing too. It's just aweful to hear anything in conversation because it never ends. They are living for free. Got money to pay debts. Got a new car. You figure that's it..... No, now there are more bills that they kept it a secret until the lawyer start to call. And finally confess that there were more bills. Sorry, I just venting. Thanks for reading. I guess this is my outlet.
I almost hate going back for Christmas. It's sad to see. Yes, I once had respect for them. It's not about hard luck and getting help. I'm all for helping people. I can't even say what this is all about. It just never ends. How do I let my kids expose to stuff like this?

Exactly. I once had to fork out $3,400 to keep one out of jail. How can you let a 50 year old woman even go through that?
They lost their home (due to not paying the lease), and was suppose to move in with me because there are NO choices. So I'm thankful for this guy. And this guy does not think like most guys. If this guy was 100% "normal" he would have said GTFO a long time ago, even for a nice guy. I fear one day he just may do that.... Then................

in the past year I have had the opportunity to get my hands on approximately 1.5 million dollars for my family and (while it would have been a harder fight) some 4 million dollars in a second issue. This money would have been divided several ways.
However, in both cases (way too lengthy to go into here) there were moral issues involved and even though we were dead right in the former matter it was not the intent of the person who had the money (in both cases) that it wind up in my family's hands. Legally, we were on really strong ground.
I took the high road in both cases, made sure the money went where it was intended to go and I sleep just fine. Blood money is never a good thing.
That being said it sounds like there are some real bloodsuckers attatched to this relative. I hope his attorney is truly looking out for his best interests if he is mentally incompetent.

I do feel for you. As I noted above I just went through some stuff not exactly like this but similar in some ways. It was 1.5 years of almost daily calls to my dad to try and protect him from a predatory stepbrother who is by the way a lawyer. Could have buried him (the stepson) and left him with nothing from his mom's estate but we didn't.
Money brings out the animal in people. It is ugly business your relatives are involved in. Don't get jealous and stick to your own morals. Bad money has a way of taking the soul out of the people who grab it - unless they had no sould to begin with.
And by God don't let your kids see this stuff or hear what is going on - or if you do it let them see how you conduct yourself and maybe they'll learn a great life lesson.

*First, I'm talking about a professional massage. Not the kinky stuff.*
Have any of you had a massage by a female massue? For no reason, all my massages have been done by men in the past. That's the way they "assigned it." However, this time, due to a change in schedule, I had a female massue.
I felt it to be more sensual, kind of a strange feeling because as a married man, here is another woman touching me. So in some ways, it felt a bit more tense. At times, it did get a bit close for comfort, where as a male massue would stay away all together. It's more like a male massue does the job, but I enjoy the process more with a female massue.
Would I ask for her again? Yes.
Can some of you share your massage experiences?
On a side note: I wonder at a massage spa, are most of their customers men or women. And I wonder the age group of the customer. Now for my illusion of grander. I'm in good shape physically. Workout, weights, etc. Do massue see customers as a slab of meat, or are they more "human?" Honestly, I think she had a gleem in her eye, and seem shy about making eye contract afterwards.

I've never had a male massue so I don't know the difference, the most recent I was in Cyprus getting off of 45 days out to sea so it didn't matter what she did it felt right but I too am married so I felt guilty even though there were other people in the room and I did nothing wrong, it was just cool and very relaxing.

id say i would have to agree with not wanting a man as a masseuse, but im not a homophobe so as long as the dude was professional it wouldn't be an issue, but if he crossed the line, well, he would be the one needing a massage after the beating he would get, but all in all, Man, Woman, a massage is a massage any way you look at it, For EX. if you need a physical from your doctor...you need to give the ol turn you head and cough right? well im sure some of us have female doctors and some have male doctors, would you not want your male doctor touching the no no area? No. id rather have the chick do it, but, its all business, its when they want to mix business with pleasure, thats when you have to draw the line IMO.

id say i would have to agree with not wanting a man as a masseuse, but im not a homophobe so as long as the dude was professional it wouldn't be an issue, but if he crossed the line, well, he would be the one needing a massage after the beating he would get, but all in all, Man, Woman, a massage is a massage any way you look at it, For EX. if you need a physical from your doctor...you need to give the ol turn you head and cough right? well im sure some of us have female doctors and some have male doctors, would you not want your male doctor touching the no no area? No. id rather have the chick do it, but, its all business, its when they want to mix business with pleasure, thats when you have to draw the line IMO.
yeah i understand the male doctor thing... i actually prefer a male doctor over a woman doctor but the massage thing is a different story

The first time I had a massage was by a female student, one of the local colleges has a massuse course and the way the students learn is from practicing on the paying public. The student practices on the person and the person gets a massage.

I get a massage every month or so. When i go i request a female. I'm not a homophobe but i dont want a guys hands rubbing me down with oil. Not thats its wrong for a guy to massage you, but to me it would freak me out a little bit. I dont get weird either from another female rubbing me down thats not my girl. My girl puts no effort into my massages and i need a professional.

My wife and I used to go in every month or so to a place in Ghent (VA) to get a couples massage. I was worried at first that I'd be uncomfortable...but that didn't last long. Every time we'd go, my wife would tell the gal (we requested the same ones everytime), that she was the only other woman who could make me moan like that. :D My gal left about a year ago, and I haven't been back. Luckily for me, she's back, and my wife and I have an appointment on Monday for our Valentine's Day present to each other. :D

Also, what is/was your comfort level? Completely disrobe or in your underwear? She instructed me to be at my comfort level.
This time (with the female massue) I stayed in my underwear. Just feel more secured that way. Just in case. Plus I was afraid what she might think if I was completely disrobed. I shouldn't be, but I do.
When I had the male massue, they all say to be completely disrobed. Again, they never work close to "the area." And man on man stuff don't work for me either, so I don't have to worry about it.

One of my martial-arts seminars was 5 days long. On the 4th day, one of our classes was on Shiatsu massage and there were only 5 ladies in a class of 40. By that time though, it really didn't matter who did the massage so long as the pain and soreness went away!

- Today
I normally would say women from the 1970s were the most attractive. Mostly because I'm generally turned off by plastic surgeries, or other enhancements, both major or minor, that is popular today. In search of perfection, the natural beauty of a women is lost. Sometimes women destroy their natural beauty. The clothing and style emphases sexuality, without just letting it all hang out or looking like a used whore on drugs. The 80s and 90s is second in my opion. But I'm not a fan of the big hair.
I was only a few years old in the 1970s. So I find it surprising that I perfer the look back then.

i will admit that most of the girls that i'm seeing are younger than i, but the whole scandelous thing is a problem. when you can't go out in public without someone trying to cop a feel and then drama erupts. i was out this weekend with one and she wasn't dolled up, she has a natuarl look to her that works. she was wearing a wifebeater and sometight jeans and out of nowhere she gets pissed. i am about 5' away and i can't tell what she is saying but this ahole tries to choke her. i didn't even make it over there before she had this guy on his a$$ looking up and stupid. you got to love a 110 lb woman that can take care of herself. although she did hog all the fun, i just got to kick him while he was down before his escort out.

Honestly, today. Every generation gets more and more attractive, it's like darwinism. The ugly women don't breed as much, and don't produce as many children, which is why the further along you go, the more "beautiful" women there are.
Selective breeding is evident.

big boobs are cool and all as long as the bra is on. Even a little bit of sagging is absolutely disgusting. I'd much rather have a woman with no boobs who has "other skills". Boobs aren't so important to me, I'd say im about 65% face, 20% butt, 10% legs, 5% boobs. And my only requirement is that there is SOMETHING there to tell that the body belongs to a woman, and does NOT sag.
Not picky really, i steer clear of big boobs cause if they dont sag now, they will later!
A lot of the reason a girls face is so important, is it's what I see, features like the face itself is huge, but a lot of it is hair also. But you can't polish a turd, an ugly girl with beautiful hair is like 10,000 dollar rims on a 1988 buick.

Women could say the same about men. I know a guy that was a competition body builder in his 20s. Gym rat. Years later, he got "lazy" and fat. We could not believe our eyes. His massive pecks that get girls going turned into man-boobs. Really, he needed a bra with a bigger cup than most women.

Ok, not really. She was this tiny thin girl and now she is "oh...Yeah...." if you know what I mean. :) She is still smokin hot with just a bit more. :) Not trying to brag, she would have no problem having guys hit on her walking down the street. But I'm see a very bad trend. Before I get into more trouble here. I'll change the direction.
She just can't stop eating ice cream, chocolate, and drinking soda. And I'm concern. In the last two years, we spend about $5,000 on her teeth. And will spend another $1,500 next month. This is with insurance. Every trip to the dentist is $1K+. I don't think we have gold digger dentist. There's just something wrong each time.
How do you say "Stop eating ice cream, chocolate, and drinking soda." I tired that "I'm concern about your teeth" angle. It turns into "You don't want me to get fat" speech. I tired the "good for your health" angle, it turns into "you don't want me to get fat" speech. Every angle turns into "you don't want me to get fat."
YES, I don't want her to get "fat."

so is this the reason for the other thread? the only way to get around it and still get your way is do cut back and be healthy together that way its not like you think she is ugly and fat, even if you feel she is getting that way. the best way to get something you want from someone is to work with them so it seems like it isn't them just doing something for you with no benefit.

Instead of talking to us you should start talking to her. I feel sorry for YOUR WIFE. First you have dirty thoughts about her best friend, now its her getting fat and her teeth.
(Deep breath)
When you go to the dentist they ask you what foods you eat and they tell you what you shouldnt eat, so she knows whats good and whats not. Dental work is very expensive, and if everytime she goes the bill is that high its not her eatting sweets, she has deeper problems then that, as in deep cleaning.
IM sure she dont enjoy going to the dentist and having to open "her wallet"as well.

Some people just simply have problems with their teeth. Doesn't matter how much they brush, floss and take care of them etc. they just end up with cavities. There really isn't anything they can do about it. I know a lady like that. She had so many problems with her teeth, and kept getting cavities, no matter what she did, that eventually, the dentist pulled them all out and gave her false teeth. She was only like 25 or so when that happened.

Absolutely, I'm just pointing out to the OP that it may not have anything to do with what his wife is eating. She just may have a problem like this. Besides, it shouldn't matter if she is putting on weight. He married her because he loved her, not because she looked like a model (hopefully). And he has to know that she wasn't going to stay looking like she looked in college for ever.

I am what most of you all would consider "fat" I have for the most part accepted my weight and have learned to live with it...i dont let it stop me from enjoying life....it may bother others but hell thats their life not mine..they have the option to turn and look away...
seeing this thread isnt upsetting its quite entertaining...for the most part its typical reactions to an uncomfy situation....and yes fat and funny sometimes go hand in hand...
but let us get on to the real subject...its not about her weight its about her TEETH...i suspect there was something that broke down the surface enamel more than icecream...sometimes if you are on certain antibiotics they can affect teeth that way as does other drugs...maybe the dentist isnt informing you of whats really going on...

Women put the stigma of having to look good all the time on themselves! Dont blame us cause we think we look good no matter how fat or bald we are! You're just jealous LOL
OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOo
Its you boys that do it too us. Its all your fault. Now if only you can say "yes dear" LOL

While I definitely agree with your whole "look in the mirror first" philosophy I do remember NoHemi in another thread mentioning being in good shape and working out, so that part may not apply to him.
He might have a well toned body, what about the other stuff like a FACE.
How about a personality to go with it.

Many of us learned how to say "yes dear". In my case a woman taught me to say "yes dear" and another one taught me to stop saying "yes dear". Funny thing is both ended up using the same method.

Naw, I'd love her anyway. I more or less joke that if she got fat I'd dump her, although I wouldn't be as attracted to her, I would still love my woman. Been with her for 6 years, about to be engaged, I often joke too much and people think I am an @$$.. ok maybe I am but I love my girl.

:silenced: Ok, not really.

Ok then Kristen, explain then why you STILL put makeup on, every day, when I am 3 hours away, and you're at college in a different state? You aren't impressing me, who ARE you impressing? I never see you 90% of the time when you're in school? DONT pull the "You want people to think your gf is pretty dont you?" I KNOW NOBODY THERE IN OHIO! nor do I care what people think of how you look.

True and if he were complaining about her getting wrinkles and things that really aren't under her control then he'd have to look at that too. It is fair for him to be concerned about her body changing significantly from when they originally met especially if the guy has kept up their appearance. Of course you can't expect everyone to stay as thin forever, but there is a reasonable amoutn of change that should be expected.
And the personality argument can only be used if his personality has changed from the time they met.

I used to work with a girl that was smoking hot, two years later she's got a double chin and her butt is 6" wider. Come on ladies, gas is too expensive to be pulling wide loads.
