View Full Version : I don't know what to do

Here's the thing....

When I bought this car I had no knowledge of mods....zippo! I had no intention of doing anything to it other than possibly some chrome wheels. But now after all the reading I have been doing....I GOTTA DO SOMETHING!!! :)

But I don't know where to start. And I have a fiance who thinks I shouldn't spend any more money on the car. He likes it just the way it is.

But I have the bug....thanks to you guys!!! Grrrrrrrr!

I guess my questions are: Do I really need to add to my car and if so, what?

Well..........................it sounds like the itch is getting hard to handle.(LOL)

Let's start with a simple question, let's prioritize your wants:

Rank these in order of importance to you. I want to make my Charger:

look better - outside
look better - inside
sound better - outside
sound better - inside
perform better (power, speed & handling)
be more fuel efficient

Chrome wheels is usually a good place to start if you have the SE base plastic wheel covers.

Let us know what is important to you, and trust me, you will get lots of ideas!

ChargerChick

I'm not sure which is the most important to me... but looking better and performing better are tied for one and two. Then would come sounding better outside and more fuel efficient. I'm fine with all the inside stuff (looking and sounding better) so no need to do anything there.

And thanks again for your help, Spoon. You rock!

Well, I'm going to do a few little things first .. K&N drop-in air filter (performance & gas mileage), synthetic oils (many benefits), cabin filter (I like clean air), and tint (looks good and keeps the interior cooler).

With more money, I'd like new rims. I think they are the single most impressive upgrade to a car's exterior. They give the car attitude that stands out from the next Charger (if you ever see any). I really like the rims Spoonerock has on (except the 15 studs around the perimeter - tougher to clean). Chargerchick ... take the time and chose the right rims for you .. use software and see what they will look like on your car before purchasing them. You'll be glad you did.

After all of that, I'd either add a color matched rear spoiler and change the grill to the honeycomb SRT version with the custom "Charger" emblem on it.

Lastly, if I had a lot of money, I'd go with the CAI from K&N, new exhaust, and a jet chip. I'm not a fan or doing the exhaust system on a brand new car. Seems like a waste of money IMHO.

If you are looking to change just the look, I would go with:
-Different rims
-tinted windows
-spoiler

The general theme is to mod the exhaust, CAI, and a comp mod. The reports seem to indicate the increase in performance and efficency! The rest seems to be personal taste. Dinted windows are nice but I'm not a big fan. The spoiler does look sharp! There is also a question of how far you want to go? Is the warranty important to you? Maybe a set of headers might be nice! How much do you want to spend? If cost isn't an issue then buy two of whatever you plan to do and send on of them to me! Please!

I have the Silver Steel SXT and I have done the following so far.

Mopar duel exhaust. ( sounds awesome and feels like it is faster)
Tinted windows. 20% on front sides and 35% on back and rear sides.
Rock Blockers on front and rear
Flat black Mopar spoiler
CAI and jet chip stage 2 next week

Its hard to stop once you get started.

Hell, I don't even have a charger and I already have the modding bug!

Really, do what you feel is right. General theme is CAI, exhaust and the JET chip.

Good luck and keep us informed.

Hello ChargerChick!

Lots of good suggestions so far............

Here are my thoughts on the subject:

You have an SXT that you want to mod. Mods can potentially cost an arm & a leg, and you would need to give me a personal budget number to help you really zero in on specifics, so I am going to give a "mod" budget of $2,000 for everything that I am suggesting for you. Here is my list for you:

New Wheels & Tires
Tinted Windows
Rear Spoiler
Cat Back Exhaust system
Cold Air Intake
Jet II performance chip

Let's start with the Wheels & Tires............

You could easily spend your entire budget (and more) on this one item alone. Your SXT came equipped with 17" aluminum alloy wheels. If you want to upgrade your rims, you will want to go with 18" or 20" to make the car more "showy". Unfortunately, that also means having to get new tires for those rims. A new set of chrome rims and tires would easily go for $500 a piece and more.

The budget sensitive route would be to go ebay and get "take offs". Those are wheels that the dealer (or tire store) have taken off a new base model car to upgrade for a new owner. The dealer who sold me my SXT did just that. They took off the 17" wheels and upgraded the car to 18" aftermarket chrome wheels. They would have then sold the original wheels on the secondary market. My 18" wheel upgrade cost $2,200 additional to the sticker price of the car.

You could get a set of 18" factory Charger RT/Daytona polished aluminum Wheels (with tires) for less than $900 on the secondary market (ebay), and you could sell your existing 17" wheels on ebay and probably get $200.

This way, your total spend for a full set of new wheels would be approx. $700

Here is a link to the wheels on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/18-Dodge-Magnum-Charger-RT-2006-Wheel-Tires_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ66484QQitemZ80157 49216QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

If you really want chrome wheels, you can still go the ebay route and get a set of 17" chrome "take off" wheels from a Chrysler 300:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2006-17-CHROME-300C-MAGNUM-WHEELS-AND-TIRES-NEW_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ66483QQitemZ8016067 679QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

So now you have about $1,300 left in your budget, lets get you some tinted windows. I can assure you that you will appreciate the tint on those HOT Arizona days, and it will definetly make your Charger more classy and mean looking. Your fellow AZ members can help you with tint laws in your state. Make sure you get ceramic based tint vs. metalic so your tint won't interfer with your AM radio reception. Metalic based tint will make AM pretty much worthless! I am allowing $200 for your tint job installed.

So now that you are down to $1,100 in your budget, lets put on a rear spoiler. Here again, ebay has good values, at prices where you can even get it painted to match your Charger's color:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DODGE-CHARGER-PAINTED-SPOILER-WING-2006-06-NEW-RT-SXT_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33638QQitemZ8015866 381QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

With shipping & install, let's figure another $300 gone from your budget, with $800 remaining.

For $500 installed, I would get the Moper semi dual exhaust cat back system. It will give your Charger "attitude" without being overly agressive sounding (yes I know I am a Zoomers fan, but we're on a budget here). I believe that there is, at least, one group buy going on from one of our forum vendors for less that $400, then another $100 for install.

Daytona_RT (Marshall) can set you up with his friend at Lildevil to get you a Stage II jet chip and AirRaid "Quick Fit Intake. Those two mods will really help improve your engines responsiveness and accleration. I would figure about $350 for those two final mods.

OOPS.........I just overspent your budget by $50, but it's real close. Of course, if you wanted to spend more..................????????

For starters however, that would be a nice little Christmas package you can suggest to your fiance (LOL) :santa:

I hope this helped you out a little.........

Any more ideas folks?

Nice post Spoonerock - very informative.

IMHO, the most effective way to change the outside is wheels/tires.
19" or 20" tires with some good W or Z rated tires fills up the wheel wells and makes a huge difference in how the car looks.

For performance, I agree with everyone else here, the CAI, exhaust, jet chip, etc. Not too expensive and gives you maybe 10-15% more horsepower.

Just a little piggy back on Spoon. I have done a little research on this myself trying to find the best setup. Performance is #1 in my book I will worry about looks later its already a sweet looking ride. Anyways if you are like me You will probobly want Intake, Exhaut, and Jet chip. My recommendation is to get your intake and exhaust done first so if you can go stage II you can. I have read about other people going stage I because they didn't do intake and exhaust upgrades and then regretting it later because they ended up getting exhaust later. I hope that all came out right just MHO. Mod on!!!

Hi Guys! You are all awesome!

Spoon, I can't tell you how much I appreciate all that information. Thank you so much!! I'm sorry I didn't get right back to you about what I have (SXT) but I'm glad someone else knew and let you know. I already have tinted windows... guess I should have stated that but I didn't consider that a mod. It's a MUST here in Arizona! LOL

So I guess I'm ahead of the game by $150

I'm not sure what my fiance is going to do, other than shake his head and mumble something about wasted money. But hey! It's my car and my money, right? RIGHT!

Thanks again Spoon and everyone...you are the best!

I'm not sure what my fiance is going to do, other than shake his head and mumble something about wasted money. But hey! It's my car and my money, right? RIGHT!I love it! 100% role reversal.

For performance on a budget for the V6's, a drop in filter should be your first mod unless you want to spend the additional $200 on a full intake. You should get 5 or 6 horsepower from the filter or twice that from the intake. The exhaust will be a good mod. Magnaflow is one of the best bangs for the buck on the cat-backs because they are a great stainless steel system but at a far less price than the other stainless manufacturers. They have a single side factory replacement out now and they will have a dual system out soon, too, for the V6. The problem with the V6's is that for performance, you are going to pay the same price for the mods as you would for the larger engines but your performance increases won't be as much. Besides and intake/filter and a cat-back, the only other mod on the market right now is the Jet module which should net you about an additional 10 rwhp. Spending $800 or more will net you an additional 25 to 30 horsepower (plus better fuel mileage) which still isn't bad.

True but the $4000 that I saved buying the V6... makes a nice 10 year investment plan for the next car! ANd the V6's get better mpg anyway! I would like to see a comparison of a stock R/T and a modded SXT on a dyno. The 500lb. difference will make a difference!

I'm not knocking my big block brothers and sisters, but it's still a Charger!

If I had some extra $ i'd do the following in this order....
1. Throw some D's on it
2. Exhaust
3. CAI
4. Window tint
5. Lighting - Silverstars, interior lighting

That will be ballin' compared to most of the chargers you see out on the road.. Least the chargers I've seen.
