I've had my SXT since end of July... still get the approving nods from drivers! SWEET! This is the ultimate American car... but rather than start a flame war... I need some guidance. I would love to improve the performance of the car but have NO CLUE. I've been looking at exhausts and chips... what's a CAI? Besides appearance is there a benefit to dual exhausts? Any concerns abouts some mods voiding the warranty. ANyone have any real numbers of the HP changes from the mods they have done?

I would love to get another 75+ hp out of the V6, but I want to have this car for a very long time. So I am not looking to destroy its long term use for a performance mod (ie. Nitro is not an option)!

CAI = cold air intake, apparently k&n is the only bolt on you can get for the sxt right now.

most of the mods ive seen on sxt's are exhaust (zoomers or mopar), CAI, stage II jet chip. ive heard people with that set up lay 15 feet of rubber with no prob. i dont know for sure cuz i dont have any mods yet but some of the other people on here can tell you better than i can. BTW welcome to the forums.

My suggestions:

1. Get the exhaust first. The only true dual catback out there currently is Zoomers. That will set you back $1,100 plus install. Everything else out there right now is either a single catback/single tip system, or a single catback/dual tip system. You can expect to spend $400 - $700 depending on the brand and the sound aggressiveness that you like. On a V6, a catback exhaust will usually add 10-20 HP at the wheels.

2. The jet chip will greatly improve acceleration and virtually eliminate engine hesitation. Expect another 10-15 hp out of that mod.

3. The Cold Air Intake (CAI) will further improve air flow through the engine and to the exhaust. There is much debate as to whether or not it increases actual HP, but best guess is 5 hp tops.

With the current mods that are available for the V6, I think a more proper HP gain expectation would be in the 25-40 HP range. But that, in itself, has made a very big performance differnce for me!

There is lots of speculation on warranties with these mods in these forums, but a good base assumption appears to be that they only impact those areas for where the aftermarket was installed, and nothing else, meaning they can't void your total warranty.

Some aftermarket warranties are actually better than the manufacturer. For example, my Zoomer catback is covered by a lifetime, million mile warranty. That sure as heck beats 3 years / 36,000 miles!

Hope this helps you out a little! Good luck "modding" your baby!!

Welcome to the forums, Paradog and thanks for asking those questions. I have been dying to ask but I didn't want to seem like a stupid girl. (oops, did I say that out loud? Guess everyone knows now...)

And a real big thank you to Spoonerock for all the great info! Thanks so much...I have really learned a lot from you! :)

You're going to love it here. And to reiterate, you'll learn a lot.

Thanks for all the info Spoon.

Ya gotta love this forum for the for the knowledge, and of course, finding good ways to spend our dough!

Spoon,

First, let me say that I am not trying to be a smart a$$ here. I just want to clarify something for my own edification (and possibly others that may also be confused). I am confused about the correct definition of a "true dual" system. The MOPAR dualy catback system replaces the "Y" pipe (from the OEM single exhaust system) with a muffler that has 2 inlets and two separate outlets that exit through dual resonators and tips. Is that not a "true dual" system? Again, I'm not trying to be sarcastic, so I appologize if my question comes across as such...

BK

As for the CAI, K&N has a system that will work on the 3.5L V6, but they do not have it listed on their website. Someone has an Airaid CAI, and Volant is in the process of developing a system. They have one for the Magnum, but I received an email from them saying that it didn't fit on the Charger like they originally thought it would. They said that they hope to have the Charger CAI out by mid December.

Good list spooner. As for CAI/Chip HP boost, I ran, ran again, and reran, on about 10 different calculations the HP formulas using both my stock 350 hp/14.2 second run and my xxx hp/13.7 second run from Friday. I had CAI/STage 2 as the only performance mod.

The RWHP was rated on nearly ALL fomulas using ET (13.717) and MPH (101.95) weight 4,350 - i was getting results of 325 to 333 rwhp. That would be an affect of 30-40 hp to the rear wheel just on these two bolt on mods.

Remember the chip is making the motor think its colder, advancing the timing, pouring more fuel quicker - which is helped with the CAI taking more AIR than normal...tranny gets more fluid pressure/quicker firmer shifts....yada yada yada....on the 5.7, Jet has dyno "ads" showing 21 hp gains at 4600 rpm. I believe it now. I've seen CAI "ads" stating anywhere from 8 - 21 hp gains. Not really scientific, but the track helped me proved some of this out.

FYI...g'day.

I would like to have my previous comment stricken from the record. I have seen the light and realized that I was incorrect in my initial description of the MOPAR V6 dual catback system. :lie:  The OEM "Y" pipe has not been replaced, and the muffler is a single in/dual out setup...not a dual in/dual out.

I humbly appologize for my inaccuracies and throw myself upon the mercy of the court. Please be gentle... :beat:
