View Full Version : First Time Stereo Install

So I'm installing my first stereo in my shiny, new black SXT, and I have a few questions before I jump right in. First off, what I'm planning on installing is 3.5's in the dash, 6.5" components in the front doors, and 6x9's in the rear deck. For a head unit I got a Pioneer Avic-D3, and I'm plugging everything into a 4 channel amp.
Now for the questions.
1.) Does anyone know exaclty what wiring harness I need? Most of what I've been able to find deals with the harness you'd want if you kept the factory amp, which I won't be doing.
2.) If I want to power the rear and door speakers off the amp, is it likely that I'll be able to power the dash speakers off the H/U?
3.) Since I've never installed a stereo before, does anyone have any suggestions on amp placement? I figured on the back of the rear seat, but is there a more out of the way place? Also, is there a specific way I should mount it?
4.) I was hoping to put the tweeter part of my component set in the B pillar, angled towards the windshield. First, is this a good idea, and second, I have the side curtain airbags, so is this even possible? Or will the airbags be in the way?
I'll also list everything I've got so if anyone notices something that I missed, please let me know. Thanks for any help that you guys can give.
Pioneer Avic D-3 DVD/Nav unit
Infinity Kappa 32.7cf 3.5" speakers
Infinity Kappa 693.7i 6"x9" speakers
Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 6.5" component speakers
Infinity Reference 7541A 4/2 channel amp
Rockford Fosgate 1 farad capacitor
Metra Kit 99-6510
4 gauge grounding wire
Rockford 4 gauge, dual amp installation kit
a 3 output distribution block (I wasn't sure if I would need another small amp
for the front speakers, and I'll eventually add sub and another amp in)
a Nav bezel
Thanks again to anyone who can help. Sorry I have so many questions, but this will be the first time I've ever done any work to a car other than changing the oil and washing it.

You will need a C-METRA 40-CR10
(antenna adapter)

The c2rchy harness is only needed if you have the factory amp and you plan on continuing using it. are you going to run the component to the Phoenix amp 800watts seems kind of high for 6 1/2 speakers no? if you are going to use the factory wire just to power the head unit and then run new wires then you need wiring harness C2R-CHYNA this is the one for cars without the oem amp it does the same thing as the other one you posted and its cheaper . .

You might be getting posts mixed up. I'm going to run 6.5" speakers, but off a 4 channel, 520 watt amp that will also be running a pair of 6x9" speakers. Thanks for the wiring harness info though. I don't plan on using the factory amp at all, so really what I need is the power connection for my H/U. Thanks to Portcitycharger too for the antenna info also. Any one else have any ideas?

Sorry. I figured that's what you might be doing, but I didn't think that his part numbers lined up with 6.5" speakers. My mistake though, please don't think that I don't appreciate the help you're giving, I do. So sorry for the mix up, and now where the hell is everyone else who can help us?

Rememer, all of your main sound comes from the front speakers. The rear speakers are only for fill. I wouldnt waste the channells on powering those off the amp. Use the built in amp in the D3 to power the rear speakers. It will still be a step up from stock. Unless you already bought them i wouldnt even bother changing the deck speakers as they are decent and you barely hear them anyway.

I don't remember the model number for the harness...I've got a similar setup, though you're running a Nav unit, while my Pioneer doesn't. I settled for Reference on the sides and rears, and Kappas in front, but they sound amazing. Not sure why you'd need a capacitor. Good luck with amp placement, as there isn't much room. Frankly, my setup doesn't look very pretty. In fact, I don't like the look at all and will be changing it soon. However, I was advised to place the tweeters in with the 6.5" in the door. When I questioned it, the installers said, "not on the pillar in this nice a car. No way." So they are all in the door. But all in all, Infinity's are great!
