View Full Version : A Speaker Keeps Cutting Out.....

Hey guys. First of all, I know just about absolutely nothing involving car stereo/accessories setups.

With that in mind, here is my problem: When listening to music in my SE (single disc, stock unit), everything sounds good, until I turn the volume up to 20 or more. Then it sound like the speaker in the driver's side door cuts in and out at times. Seems like it's more so when bass hits (I don't have any subs hooked up, but I do keep the bass turned all the way up). I noticed this about 2 days after first buying my Charger (bought it new) but was too lazy to take it back and ask the dealership since I bought it about an hour away from my home.

How do I know if the speaker is about to go out? Is there maybe just a loose wire? What's the best way to go about this myself, so I don't have to pay the dealership to take a look & fix it (I told you, I'm a n00b! :) ). All help is appreciated! :)

Not sure if this is the same problem, there has been a TSB fix on the factory radio and a bass issue. Search for it here or maybe someone else can add to this?

I tried searching but couldn't find anything :( Anyone else have anymore insight into this?

Sounds like a bad speaker to me.

Would it really be a bad speaker though if it works and sounds perfect most of the time, until I turn it up past 20 on the volume and that's when it may start cuttin out for a second here and there?

If it was a bad speaker, wouldn't it be cuttin out, regardless of what volume level it was at?

Nope, what happens is the wires that connect the terminal to the coil can break and when the volume is low there isnt much movement of the speaker and the wires remain touching. When you turn it up the cone moves in and out more dramatically thus breaking the connection.

Damn, so I'm just basically gonna have to get a new speaker?

Yes, I dont know if blown speakers fall under warranty. You could try. If your still unsure just swap speakers from driver to passenger, its still possible that maybe the connection is loose on the speaker but I doubt it.

Alright, with that being said, remembering that I'm just a SUPER n00b at these things, can someone explain how to get the door panel off to get to the speakers. Is it screwed or what? (I warned you about my ignorance lol). Thanks for all the help!

Go here and download the service manual, then open the section on body, doors trim panel removal it is quite easy to do.

Thanks a bunch! I'm gonna do this for sure on my day off, switch the driver's side speaker with the passenger side's, and update this thread with my findings.

I bump my raps with volume of 20-22 with deep azz bass and my speakers never cut out. Might be the amp or the speakers.
