We like fast, but really, why is it all about the finish line? Why can’t Tony Stewart be awarded style points for “creative” driving, or to Danica Patrick for, uh, creative publicity efforts? For those moments where we’d rather be entertained by creativity than blown away by speed, there’s drifting, where competitions are about style and technique, not checkered flags. It’s no wonder that the sport is gaining major popularity, to the point that the next The Fast and the Furious movie will be all over that sport.
MOPAR and Dodge were in on drifting before it was cool and they’ve so far been dominating the sport. Here are some pics of the modified Dodge Charger R/T unveiled today at SEMA, and there are some new and exciting things in the pipeline for Dodge’s drifting prospects. A name hasn’t been released for the vehicle yet, but Dodge promises a 6.1L SRT8 engine heavily modified to meet the horsepower and torque needs of a drifter.

Didn't realize years ago when my buddies and I would take our pickups out in a wet pasture and slide around that we were 'drifting'. Just thought is was 'mud doggin'. It was cheap fun; could do it in a 4cyl S-10 up to a full size w/454.
Now, look what happens when a city kid with rich parents wants the same thrill. Pave paradise with a parking lot, and buy lots of tires.

Actually, it derives for the Japanese car crowd taking what is really the fastest way around a turn and perverting it into its own thing. Instead of using a drift to get around a corner faster, the drift itself is the thing. Like how lowering a car, which can be a good thing for performance, became the end itself even at the exspense of the original goal.
Or how louder exhausts, originally louder becuase it that was a byproduct of making the car faster, became just louder, with sometimes no performance gain. Like "performance exhaust tips" :)

I thought difting requires more energy than than it produces making it an uneffective way to handle curves on a road course?

Okay, Mr Ron SMarty Pant:) Truthfully, you must be right on the very edge of drifting to be optimum through a turn, but not quite there. So yes, you are correct, but its easier to explain it my way:)

This car I think is 100% functional for what it was built for...Drifting.
I was very happy when you said you liked it an didn't call it a ricer for having a hood scoop or a VERY big rear spoiler.

Any word on who will drive it? In drifting just as in any other motor sport, the driver will make or break the team. Looking forward to the GTO vs Charger drift battles, that'll look pretty sweet watching them both on a track at the same time.

Charger vs GTO in drift? Cool. As long as I don't see any damn Mustangs, they are an eye sore for me.
Anybody in here like the '66 recycled Mustang (Oooops, I mean the 2005 - 2006 Mustang)?

Those wider wheel wells, and wide rims, look incredible!
So, anyone else notice that it's only a 2 door? Also, it says 6.1 HEMI on the scoop, but the website claims it's a 392CI. Should be a wicked car.

What I dont get is folks calling a 4 door with the rear doors welded shut a 2 door? Same as that General Lee one floating around.
And nobody get excited about the fenders, they are most likely NOT going to be offered by Mopar, not in my opinion

Website contradicts, specs say 6.1, image gallery shows the 6.4. Specs also say that a lot of stuff is "under development", including the trans:)

Well, it looks like there's real 2 door Charger at SEMA. Tough angle in the picture but I don't see the post and I don't see a seam indicating a second door. Does anyone have a better picture to be sure?
GLHS837
11-10-2005, 01:31 PM
"Real", yes. Its a physical car with two doors. West Coast Customs can cut it up anyway they want:) Does not make it production car.

They are shaved. Not one seam anywhere to indicate the car had ever been a 4 door. That is a damn nice job -- and yes, the car is now a 2 door so stop trying to call it a 4 door. This can be done by anyone who wants to buy a Charger and have it done.
Yes, get excited by the fenders if you choose to. Again, it can be done by any competent body shop if you are willing to pay for it.
I'm surprised you didn't also claim not to get excited by the 392CI engine.
Who cares what MOPAR offers to the public! Buy the car, then personalize it. What you end up with is something MOPAR would not have offered to the public. That's the whole point of being an enthusiast.

Rax, my point was that folks were pointing to these things and implying that they indicated such things might be forthcoming as production items. Dodge shows stuff at SEMA and other places that are marketing, pure and simple. I'm simply pointing this out.

True, that's what SEMA is for. But at the same time, it does show that they still recognize that the public has an interest in a 2 door muscle car. Although I really don't believe they'll come up with a 2 door charger (it would be poor marketing), it might be an indication of their thinking on the subject of a 2 door car. If they do come up with a 2 door car (challenger perhaps) I hope it doesn't go the way of the srt-6. We need a V8 2 door.

Sorry Rax a lot more work went into that car then just welding the doors shut. That car has definitly been sectioned and the frame shortened. You are right on one thing though it's a hell of a job, but hey im sure any body shop could do that, huh? Get real.....

I agree with with our SUPER MODERATOR on this one. 4 doors is 4 doors. Just because you can't open them doesn't change that... Folks who want a 2 door Hemi will have to wait for the Challenger. I like the body work, but the spoiler is a little over the top..Gotta like Mopar blue.

What is with this post? Did you notice that the car you posted a pic of is NOT THE CAR BEING DISCUSSED in this thread? At least read the thread before you start making comments.

I think a Charger this color would go over well.
