View Full Version : Unknown noise in engine compartment, during acceleration...

NOTE: Even though this is a "Problem/assistance" post, I'm posting this in the V6 section, because the main issue is related to the 3.5L V6 engine.

I was wondering if any ther V6 3.5L owners have noticed a subtle "vacuum" air sucking noise and then a "click"/or "clack" when accelerating ?

- About 3 weeks ago, after taking my car to the Dealer for my "freebie" oil change, I noticed that while the car is moving, if I tap the gas pedal, or even when I depress it enough, but not enough for a downshift, I hear a "vacuum" air sucking ("whoosh") and then a "click"/ or "clack" noise.
- I never heard this noise before - and from day one, I've paid close attention to how the car and engine sound while I am driving (there are times when I don't turn the stereo on, so I hear everything).

- I've got a couple of other odd things that I have noticed recently - I may post more on them later - 1) It seems like my compressor is always running, (2) I hear the "tick, tick, tick..." (lifter) noise from the engine - much like the "hemi tick" that someone else posted, (3) At times my right rear wheel seems to be making a rubbing noise - like the brake is rubbing. NOTE: because of the issue where "we" all seem to hit the parking brake when getting in the car, I make a point to make sure the parking brake is not engaged, (every time)before I drive away.

Thanks for your feedback, in advance -

Brian T.

I haven't heard anything like that in mine? Since you say it is very recent, perhaps you got a bad tank of gas, or perhaps some water moisture has gotten in there via condensation??

This happened to me with another car I owned years ago, and a mechanic friend of mine advised me to put a bottle of "HEAT" in the tank. I don't know if that did the trick or not, the the acceleration tick, tick, tick went away almost immediately!

Hope this helps, or maybe others will chime in with thoughts!

Spoonerock,
Thank you for the note - I have actually been through 3 tanks of gas since noticing the "vacuum sucking noise and click/clack" and the other "tick, tick..." noise.
For "vacuum sucking noise + click/clack", I think that I have a bad vacuum switch or something in the engine compartment.

The "tick, tick, tick..." noise is seperate from the other noise - Just to confirm, you don't hear the "tick, tick, tick..." noise at all ?

- One of the things that I am wondering, for the "tick, tick..." noise, is maybe the dealer put the wrong oil in when they did the change. I am suspicious of that, because when they did the oil change, I drove home from the dealer and then checked the oil level and it was one quart low. I took it back to the Dealer the next day and they added the extra quart - But, I think the mechanic was following the specs for some other engine - one that used a different oil weight and a different amount of oil.

Well, the car still runs and I'm not getting any warning lights - But, I may tell the service guys about these things, when I take it in for the exhaust upgrade.

Thank you,
Brian T.

I know this may sound stupid, but sometimes you might get a tick, tick sound if you tires are underinflated, or if a wheel balance weight has fallen off?

Just grasping at straws here...........

Actually, the "tick, tick, tick..." happens when it is idling as well.

I used to get a "tick, tick, tick..." noise while driving, from the hub caps on my '98 Plymouth Breeze (that I traded in). But, the "bolt" on wheel covers on my Chargers Steel wheels, have not made any noises yet.
