The local news is going to make a report on it... Anyone know what the deal is?

Apparently his car was an 1 inch too low.

I think they said that it was more of an equiptment malfunction, than an attempt to cheat. Either way it was too low, so he gets penalized.

The last I've heard and read, Gordon won't be penalized because his infraction was deemed "unintentional." His only "punishment" will be to start at the back of the pack. My question is...how do they determine if something is intentional or unintentional?

So, basically, they found rules infractions on another car...a car driven by one of the sport's superstars...and they found this AFTER all the other "cheating." Also, NASCAR officials stated that they would not tolerate any cheating, and that a statement needs to be sent to the teams, which is why they hammered the other teams this week. I guess the statement here now is:

"We have our favorites in the garage and we will reserve the right to maintain double standards in order to ensure that our favorites are protected."

Finally, Jack Rousch said that he will appeal NASCAR's penalties on the #17 team on the basis that their decisions are inconsistent. I hope that Evernham follows suit.

“We are 100 percent sure this is unintentional,” said Pemberton, himself a former crew chief. “I believe that because of my own experiences through the years. It would take a different set of parts and pieces to machine something to do that intentionally.”
Still, the fact remained that Gordon’s car was too low in the postrace inspection. While he officially remains the winner of the second 150-miler, Gordon will start the Daytona 500 in the 42nd position. No further penalties against his team are expected, Pemberton said.

"...Nascar's faces of inconsistency, favoritism, and double standards!!!!"

And... this is different from classic Nascar in what way now?

Let's face it: Nascar = automotive WWF.

Did anyone see that finish? Gordon did some slick driving. He got bumped in the rear, took it to the inside with inches between cars and passed for the finish.:)

He'll have to be right on the perfect set up, and have his best driving skills in tune, if he can pull 42 positions in the race.

I don't really follow Nascar, but I love racing of any form...

This is complete crap, I can't say I've ever seen a car lower itself an inch, unless it was air-ride that is and those drop a lot more than an inch!

It was slick. he barely snuck by Kurt Busche.
Im far from a Gordon fan. but he will be in the top 10 with in 50 laps.
And if he didnt win the qualifier, he wouldnt be starting in 42nd

When you see the hat up close, is actually has a "19" in front of the 48.

Though I heard that Waltrip lost his crew chief for a strange substance (close to jet fuel) in his car.

Never was and never will be jeff gordon fan. In fact I really quit watching nascar when all the cars started looking the same. I'd much rather go to a local dirt track where the fans are more fun to be around and the racers, rac for he fun of it.

I am not a big Gordon fan, but he wasn't cheating. Something broke in the shock or the shock mount or something like that which caused the car to be too low during post race inspection. Because of the broken part found he will not be penalized.
Hey, he is gonna be a daddy, so give him a break! :)

The main reason i dont watch nascar anymore(before every race every lap)is all the flip flopping on the rules when it effects one of the five that they talk about all the time.

piont Mark Martan was fined 25 pionts for running a spring that nascar hands out that turned out to be out of spec. but it was like that when the crew recieved it.

another piont Martan was leading when a wreck behind him was allowed to race to the finish were harvick inched by.

I thought the whole reason for freezeing the field was for safety.

Why not now.

Also after the white flag the race is over with a caution.

Martan should have won the race.

I've grown to hate nascar over time and wont watch a single race.

Just feed up.

Dude, you gotta lay off the Bud Light before you hop on the forums to post..... I mean 4 hours of NASCAR does make a guy more drunk than normal - but dang......

Anyway, Mark Martin winning without being in a Roush Ford is freakin' sacrilege. I'm kind of glad he didn't pull out a win. Don't get me wrong, I rooted for Mark when he was in a Valvoline 6 making up the entire field at Watkins Glen after he had a lug nut fall off on two separate tire changes. I also didn't give a lick when the old man started posing as the Viagra poster boy. Heck, him winning races in his Winn Dixie car was great. But man, watching him race a Chevy is crappy.

I still remember the old rules about racing back to the line on yellows. I don't even know why they started that whole garbage about freezing the positions the moment a wreck occurs. I do agree though, the rules are hella hard to follow when you're drunk.

what ever happen to making your car the fastest and best to win the race. has america really turning into passive, bully producing presidents, and soft on the ememy when fighting country. P.S. hell on our guys who kill in combat and hell on border patrol agents for doing their jobs. Oh well the rant is complete

just got done watching the daytona 500. i had to drink a micro keg just to keep my interest in the damn race. i cant see how anyone can watch this "sport" sober.

on another note, the kegs from costco are really cool. a good conversation piece before the all-star game.

There was a Chevy in there? All I saw were a bunch of identical plastic bodies draped over tubular frames, with different "body features" painted on... if there was a Chevy in there (or a Dodge or a Ford, for that matter), the camera certainly wasn't following it.

I think Pontiac did the right thing by getting out a few years ago... this is just getting so WWF-ish.

LOL! You're right... I should have said "I'm glad they stopped painting Pontiac nose details on these race cars".

Must make it a snap for teams to change sponsors.
"Hey Junior, take that there sander over to the Number xx car and wipe that nose clean, Fred's coming over later today to paint me a Ford".

Is there really a difference between a big dude wearing a black jersey with a big C on the helmet or a another big dude with a silver helmet with a Lion on it? No? Then why do we care about any sport at all?

It's not about how the cars are interchangeable and have no real bearing to the showroom. It's about getting drunk and watching something dumb to kill an afternoon.

Sooooo True!!! What other racing sport tries to SLOW the cars down...
IRL - no
NHRA - no
Power Boats - no
Soap Box Derby - not even
Why does NASCAR think slower, perfectly even, identical cars, restricted by a set of rules that eliminates innovation, will make for a better, more entertaining show. They've lost their way and the reduced viewership last year and this year will continue to prove it.

It's too bad too, I used to really enjoy NASCAR when a Chevy looked like a Chevy, Ford looked like a Ford, and Dodge kicked everyone's @ss!!!

I couldn't have said it better than this:

NASCAR’s inconsistent application of their own rules bracketed the weekend, with three crew chiefs sent home for flagrant cheating, two other crew chiefs suspended for two weeks for a rules’ infraction that has never been published, and one team given a slap on the wrist for a failing to meet minimum height requirements.
