View Full Version : Removing MPH Limit on V6

Has anyone thought about how fast the SXT can go?? Anyone hit the limiter at approx 117 mph??? I want to go faster.
- Has anyone thought of getting a reprogrammer to remove the limiter??
- Does the Jet Chip remove the limiter or can they send one programmed properly??
I had my SXT up to 117 on a country road the other day and wanted more. It may be a V6, but 125mph+ is still fast as hell......

search the forums for "programmer" - you'll see there is a line of people with wallets waiting to go... nothing as of yet.

I've got mine up to 195 km/h on a secondary highway up here in canada. I originally assumed the charger would be governed like the dodge truck, 174 km/h, guess that's changed.
Is the governer just a top gear rev limiter? Or a speed governer?

I'm not sure with the V6, it may be a speed govener. I know with the R/T's it is a speed govener and hopefully the programmer comes out soon so it can be overridden...
(By the way, 195 km/h is about 121 mp/h)

I am sure it is speed Governed to run parellel with the speed rating on the tires. I am sure you have T maybe. what ever the ones that are rated up to 118. most limiteres are based on the speed rating of the tires.

Ok this might be a stupid question but what happens when u reach the speed limit? Does it just not go any faster?..sorri if this is a retart question but figured better to ask then never know ..LOL

I have maxed out my Daytona several times (Daytona's and R/T's w/ the R&T package are governed at 145mp/h) and it stops accelerating and slowly decelerates to about 135 and then gives power again.

Its a strange and startleing feeling if its the first time and not watching out for it. It basically just cuts the gas. RPMs drop until you slow down below that goverened speed. its like putting the clutch in while accellerating with out the engine rev. it feels like someone taps the break from the passenger seat. I think i have said the same thing like eleventy billion times.

My Charger is also a V6 and I want to go faster as well. I installed a performance chip that allows me to get up to 120. I still need more though. So if anyone has any information on removing the governor i would really like to know.

Yep! It feels like the short "pause" you get when the transmission shifts... but there's no shift! Mine made it to about 116. Good enough for me!

I think the B&G flash removes the speed limiter.

Yep B&G are the only one's that can help us in this area...

i hit 115 once at 4 am on a desereted road. it wouldn't go higher. But unless you r racing on a track whats the need to go that fast? 115 should be just fine.

How did you remove the limiter? I am surprised that it will even do 135. I wouldn't think a 3.5L would do 135.

B&G only raises the limiter it does not eliminate it. The chip doesn't have very high reviews from what I see. I am waiting on a diablo for us, that will handle all of that.

I've heard this before, some Chargers were not created equally, lol. Seriously, the limiter is set differently for diferent Chargers and maybe it was even left off some, I heard of one guy getting to around 125 and letting off before he found it, while the car was stock, just lucky I guess.

Yeah it seems like it's mostly the SE that this is happening to from what I've seen so far. Some Special Edition I'd say... :(

My 3.5se cuts out at 122. I think most cut out at around 118, but mine is well within the standard deviation of modern computerized calibration methodology.

if you want to raise the limiter...go for the flash. reflashes are pretty much the main way to change ECU function on OBD2 computer cars.
if we had chips for this car it would be sooo much easier. remove the ecu board and replace it with a new chip, but OBD2 kinda rained on that parade. cars havent been "chipped" since around late 1995, when the change to OBD2 started to be implemented.
thats why everyone is waiting for a programmer and thats why the V8 guys are ditching their jet modules for programmers.
the jet module has been dyno proven to LOSE both HP and TQ. the highest gains ever dynoed from the jet module were 2.5HP and 4.5TQ. the most recent dyno showed a loss of 2HP and a loss of 8TQ. the majority of the other dynos showed losses in HP and slight gains in TQ. the jet module may work well with some of the V8's, mainly the SRT's, but so far for the V6's our lack of ignition power and lack of air flow mods, limit the module from tricking the computer to run rich. no point in running rich if the air nor spark is there to combine all three.
butt dynos tell people one thing, but actual dynos are showing otherwise. i'll trust before and after dynos when it comes to the jet module.

X2, and don't be confuse by the last post, the jet is NOT a chip!! It makes the engine run rich by making it think you are sucking up cold air. It doesn't work and I haven't heard a good word about it.

I have reached 130mph in my 2007 3.5 V6. It is a police package though. I have a nice camera phone pic of it. I really think it will go faster than that. I could obviously feel the speedlimiter.

The manual says 89 octane, so that's what I use. I get better fuel economy an my car runs smoother than with 87 octane. There was no difference with 93 octane, however.

Here is a video of the top speed on my SXT
It was taken at a Dyno day last Nov.
We had 4 V-6's there that day and all topped out at 115MPH

I noticed on your video, that your speedo only reads 140mph. My car reads 160mph, so i guess thats pretty cool.

Not that I plan on racing this car... but out of curiosity, how long can you "safely" expect to drive at 100+mph on "regular" tires?
For example, if you are going to run road races every Sunday, running 100+ for 4 to 5 minutes at a time, "should" you get V- or Z-rated tires?

this is from the "Tire Rack"
Speed ratings are based on laboratory tests where the tire is pressed against a large diameter metal drum to reflect its appropriate load, and run at ever increasing speeds (in 6.2 mph steps in 10 minute increments) until the tire's required speed has been met.
It is important to note that speed ratings only apply to tires that have not been damaged, altered, under-inflated or overloaded. Additionally, most tire manufacturers maintain that a tire that has been cut or punctured no longer retains the tire manufacturer's original speed rating, even after being repaired because the tire manufacturer can't control the quality of the repair.
Over the years, tire speed rating symbols have been marked on tires in any of three ways shown in the following examples:
M 81 mph 130 km/h
N 87 mph 140km/h Temporary Spare Tires
P 93 mph 150 km/h
Q 99 mph 160 km/h Studless & Studdable Winter Tires
R 106 mph 170 km/h H.D. Light Truck Tires
S 112 mph 180 km/h Family Sedans & Vans
T 118 mph 190 km/h Family Sedans & Vans
U 124 mph 200 km/h
H 130 mph 210 km/h Sport Sedans & Coupes
V 149 mph 240 km/h Sport Sedans, Coupes & Sports
When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities.
W 168 mph 270 km/h Exotic Sports Cars
Y 186 mph 300 km/h Exotic Sports Cars
While a Z-speed rating still often appears in the tire size designation of these tires, such as 225/50ZR16 91W, the Z in the size signifies a maximum speed capability in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h; the W in the service description indicates the tire's 168 mph, 270 km/h maximum speed.
225/50ZR16 in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h
205/45ZR17 88W 168 mph, 270 km/h
285/35ZR19 99Y 186 mph, 300 km/h
Most recently, when the Y-speed rating indicated in a service description is enclosed in parentheses, such as 285/35ZR19 (99Y), the top speed of the tire has been tested in excess of 186 mph, 300 km/h indicated by the service description as shown below:
285/35ZR19 99Y 186 mph, 300 km/h
285/35ZR19 (99Y) in excess of 186 mph, 300 km/h
As vehicles have increased their top speeds into Autobahn-only ranges, the tire speed ratings have evolved to better identify the tires capability, allowing drivers to match the speed of their tires with the top speed of their vehicle.
