View Full Version : Those with aftermarket systems...where did you put your tweeters?

Especially curious if anyone has put them in the a-pillars. Wondering how much room is behind them...

Looking to do a 3 way system with the midrange up in the dash, tweets in the a-pillars, and midbass in the doors.

Thanks!

I have not done a system yet, however I do know that the pillars pull off very easy. I pulled the driver side off when I did a harwire install for my GPS. There's quite a bit of room available, but I don't know if you are looking to sink them into the pillar for a flush mount look .....

The tweeters I plan on using are from the MBQ QSD/QSC set, the QTD 25...ideally I'd like to mount them behind the pillar using no mounting hardware (i.e. hot glue them in) and then put a black grill over them using grill cloth that would completely hide them.

Your better off doing a 2 way system. There is an article about it in the new issue of car audio magazine. Check it out and then go from there. I know all the contests I go to have 2way instead of 3way set ups, but who knows it only matters what you want and what will make you happy when it comes to car audio.

Actually, that's not necessarily true if I can get the midrange close to the tweeter...there are major advantages to that vs. having a tweeter several feet apart from the mid, not to mention putting a tweeter in the dash location where it's firing up against the windshield.

The car audio mags have some decent info, but if you want to find some serious competitors, check out:

I've been seriously into car stereo since 2000 and have used quite a few different sets of speakers and my personal results have led me to prefer a 3 way passive system over a 2 way active and/or passive system.

And I would really like to say that so far I'm very impressed with the attitude of the people on here in regards to car stereo...car specific boards are notorious on the car audio forums for people that are incredibly ignorant and biased, but from my searching on here it seems people are open minded and very respectful of what others have done.

My current plans for the system are:

Stock HU (have)
Rockford Fostage 3SIXTY.2 processor (have)
MBQ QSC 3 way set (have)
Alpine PDX amps (have a 4.150)
Subs...dunno yet. I have an 8W7 sitting around from the truck, but I may want a little more bass. Thinking of a pair of 10W6v2's w/ a PDX 1.600

Install will be done by Steve at Tweeter in Frisco, Tx...the best installer I've dealt with to date. Only person I truly trust with my vehicles, which is saying something.

He did this box in the Xterra:

He's going to finish off some stuff for me in the X this weekend and that vehicle will be done...overkill for the wife, but so be it. :)

Yea, you'll notice most of the people here and at th LXfourms are nice guys. I've never done a 3way system, in my car, mostly because it's a lot of work. I've seen and heard people try it and they usually run into phasing issues, or gaudy panels or even worse they have to customize there whole dash board. It's just to much damn work :) I drive my car everday and if i decide I want a challenger I want to be able to take everything out pretty quick. Once ya get it done don't forget to take pictures so we can check it all. If you can go with 2 w6's I know they are tighter then the w7's. I went with one just for space, but i've heard people with the 2, w6's and I'm still kinda on the fence about if i made the right decision. Ah well can't wait ta see the pics and welcome to the board

Oh, I completely agree about making drastic cosmetic changes to the vehicle, which is why I'd want to put the midrange up in the dash (should fit in stock 3.5" location) with the tweet in the a-pillar, but what I'd do is put the tweeter right behind the piller and then have a grill make to cover it so it'll blend better.

And after doing extensive research on here I discovered that the rear deck has that opening for an 8" sub. I'm really thinking of putting a 10 or 12 inch sub up there mounted underneath to an MDF baffle...that or a trio of 8" subs and remove the stock 6x9s. Then hide the PDX-4.150 in the spare tire area or under a seat. With that and keeping the stock HU, the vehicle will be completely functional and look perfectly stock with the exception of the a-pillars.

Sounds like you have a well planned system. I like the fiberglass pocket subs, but I know atleast 2 people on here have the setup you are talking about. Good Luck, and if ya get a chance go to chryslers of carisle so I can see this beast
