Im thinking about having my dealer install the mopar remote start so I wont void my warranty with an aftermarket. Its over priced and I heard from a friend of mine thats a dodge tech that there are alot of problems with the remote start kits do you guys know if this has been resolved? does anyone have it installed? Any problems? Also i think i read on here somewhere someone found a way to use remote start from their key is there an easy way to do this? or is it complicated? haha thanks in advance to my million questions.

Mine works well. I unhooked the horn wire as instructed in another thread so that only the parking lights are on when the car is started remotely. My only gripe is that it only runs for 10 minutes before shutting off and I rather it ran for about 20 minutes.

i was thinking about getting this as well. i called my dealer and the cost is about $500 installed. but i didn't realize it only stays on for 10 minutes? is that true with all remote starters or just the mopar one? also, you say you unhooked your horn wire. does that mean you no longer can use your horn? i hardly ever use my horn, but you never know when it will actually be useful to avoid an accident/collision. i wouldn't want to disable it just so i can have a toasty car in the morning.

i just had mine done it can run for 15 max but they have to do that for you some how and horn is just a feed from unit don't have that hooked up (unless you hate your neighbors) but overall it runs fine

The horn still works, just disabled it from honking in concert with the remote start. I had an aftermarket starter on another car and it ran for 20 minutes.

For the folks that have it installed, did you install it or have the dealer do the install? If you had the dealer install it, what was the price they quoted you? Any info is greatly appreciated.

I just got the 2 way Mopar remote start installed at the dealer this past weekend. I got the starter from another Dodge dealer on the Internet. The local dealer where I got it installed charged $150. I asked the tech to not install the feed to the horn. As others have said, there's no point annoying the neighbors each time you start the car. It can be programmed to run for either 10 or 15 minutes.

Just remember, folks, that horn thing is a safety feature, to warn critters and kids away from the car before starting. So be sure you eyeball the car at least for kids around it. A know you run a small risk of a critter being up in your engine when it starts.
The shrouding should pretty much prevent and kid from having a hand searching for a lodged ball from getting caught, and most critters, but the risk , however small is still there.
Why would you want the car to run for 20 minutes? She should be fully warmed up well before that, I would think.

After ten minutes of running, the temp gauge hasn't even moved. I just hit the starter again for the extra ten. You can have the dealer raise it to 15 minutes but I doubt that would make much difference. The horn beeps twice when you initiate the starter sequence...not continuously. For what ever reason my horn quit beeping at start up...I'm sure my neigbhors appreciate that as I leave for work at 5 am.
I originally had problems with mine not working but the dealer ( after several trips) put in a new unit and since then has worked fine.
Good option...especially up here.

I'm interested in knowing what the 2-way remote start does as well. also, what price did you get it for? my dealer wants $500 for part and installation. i don't know if that's for the regular or "2-way" remote start. any information would be appreciated.

Around $479 installed just the other day. Yeah, the horn is annoying as it is about to start. Good point about kids and critters though! Had a friends cat get a bit messed up one morning as he was sleeping hard inside someones engine and got his leg real messed up.

As I remember it, the 2way is just an addon for the remote start kit which interfaces with your car and lets you know what is going on. It's a new fob for the keychain that has a visual and audible alert telling you the thing is running.

Exactly. Even after the extra ten minutes it not a heck of a lot warmer. I unhooked the horn beep out of consideration of the neighbors also. I had mine installed at the time the car was purchased and paid $250 for the whole deal. I paid $230 for the one on my last car about 2 years ago.

As Titan said, the 2 way feature is relatively new. It's an add on to the base unit. It has a differnet antenna and a different key fob. It sends a signal back to the key fob (a light flashes on the key fob and it beeps) when the car is running. It's so you know the car is running if you can't see it. It supposedly adds range to the base package as well. I paid $355 Cdn for the base unit and the 2 way package.

It also serves to let you know how many times you hit the button from a distance.......or better yet how many pushes reached the reciver. When I first got my car (had it installed by dealer before pickup) they left it disconnected. I could never tell if it was started from a distance. The horn also beeps to let you know it failed to start. This happens on inclines and on very hot days for some reason.

i'm hoping to get one shortly too. my question is this. is there a part number so i can look for the kit on the internet (the kit with and without the 2-way remote)? i have a feeling my dealer is asking a bit much at $500 for parts/installation. maybe i can get it a little cheaper on the net and have them (or my garage guy) install it to save some cash.
i love the idea of the 2-way remote to let me know when my car is started when i'm not in its line of sight, but i hate the fact that i'll have to carry around another big key/remote.

I bought a cheap one from ebay and a friend has it and it works fine. Will this void my warranty when installed and if so how will the dealer know it is installed?

Good luck with this one, should not void warranty but you will have a tough time with the factory starter disable and trying to start the car. There are other options out there other than Factory, Viper makes 2 different units one is a 2 way, have this on another car but it eats batteries(remote) so I don't care for it. Other unit is an alarm too and should be about $400-500 installed.

I have the Mopar remote starter, only gripe is it only runs 10 min., not long enough to warm up in a cold Michigan morning. Took it back to the dealer and they said that there wasn't any way to make it run longer.

Zman,
In the owners manual for the starter (I know...who reads the manual), there is a procedure on how to program it for either 10 or 15 mins. Let me know if you don't see it in there and I'll try to find mine.

My owners manual doesn't say anything about this procedure. If your manual tells you how to change the run time I would sure like to give it a try. Thanks.

ZMan,
The procedure is actually in the installation instructions vice the owners manual. If you have the installation instructions, go to page 10 which will get you into programming mode. On page 15, the actual option settings are listed. Option 4 is the actual run time. The factory default is 10 mins. The other option is 15 mins.
If you have the 2 way kit, there is also an installation addendum which has slightly different options. The programming instructions are on page 4 and the option listings are on page 6.
If you don't have the instructions, here is a post that has the manual PDFd. As I said, the 2 way kit has slightly different options.

You can also change it to 15 minutes, I had the dealer install mine they had it at 10 and I made them change it to 15.

I bought mine from a guy brand new for 175 shipped off of ebay. I had the dealer install it and they added it to my warranty since it is the actual Mopar part. So now if it breaks in three years the dealer gets me a new one! Hope this answers your question about voiding your warranty.
The dealer charged me 150 plus 4 dollars in parts.

i installed a ton or remote starts on dodges when i last worked at a dealer . buy the kit and do it yourself . it is easy, takes about 4 hours to do right but works great. To any one that ever has a no start issue with their remote start chrysler put out a tsb about bad hood switches. If it ever doesnt start you can run a ground to one of the hood switch wires and it'll start every time. Probably half the ones i installed then came back for the hood switch tsb because so many of them out there were bad. Anyways its still a great system and extremely easy

remember if you buy the cheap ebay ones you have a chip in your key that will kill the ignition if your key isnt present. Aftermarket kits like i install at the shop have to have either a 3rd key in the module or an extra module where you dial in the resistance of the key but without one or the other you will have no starty.

Yeah, I installed mine, too. The first kit I bought wasn't the two way system, but I upgraded mine to the two-way and it works great. The range is improved substantially. A couple of small issues: 1. The remote seems to go through batteries like crazy. 2. Sometimes the remote start system will start the car, and then the car will immediately die, but the system still thinks it's started. Doesn't happen very often, though.
They really aren't that hard to install as long as you are handy with a soldering iron.

1. Transmitter Programming.
A. Make sure battery is connected.
B. Close hood.
C. Turn the ignition to the “on” position.
D. Press and hold the programming button. After 10 seconds the horn will chirp and the lights will flash 3 times indicating the system is now in transmitter learn mode.
E. Release the programming button.
F. Press button on transmitter to be programmed. The horn will chirp and the lights will flash 1 time indicating that the transmitter has been learned.
G. Repeat step F for additional transmitters.
2. Option Programming.
The remote start system has several installer programmable options which can be changed to accomodate different circumstances. In most cases, there will be no need to change any default settings. There will be cases (such as deisel vehicles), where the delay before crank option must be set.
Note:This system has 2 option banks. Bank 1 has 7 options, and Bank 2 has 2 options. Refer to the Options Bank Chart on page 15 for details.
A. Follow the steps above to enter Transmitter Learn Mode.
B. Press and release the programming button. The horn will chirp and the lights will flash 4 times indicating the system has entered Option Bank 1.
C. Press and release the brake pedal. The horn will chirp and the lights will flash 1 time indicating the system is at option 1. Additional press and releases of the brake pedal will advance to the next option. The horn will chirp and the lights will flash according to which option is selected (i.e. Two chirps and flashes indicates option 2).
D. Pressing the transmitter button changes the setting of the option. The status LED (located in the main harness approximately 4” from the module) indicates the setting of the option. LED “on” indicates the option is on, LED “off” indicates the option is off.
Option Programming - continued.
E. Pressing and releasing the programming button again will put the system into Option Bank 2. The horn will chirp and the lights will flash 5 times indicating the system has entered Option Bank 2.
F. Press and release the brake pedal to cycle through the options in Bank 2. Notes:
Once the system has reached the last option in a bank, pressing and releasing the brake pedal will return back to option 1 in that bank.
Once the system has reached Option Bank 2, pressing and releasing the programming button will return back to Option Bank 1.
To reset options back to their default setting, while in option learn mode, push and hold the transmitter button until the horn chirps and lights flash 5 times.
3. Tach Rate Programming (Required for system to operate).
A. Close hood.
B. Turn the ignition to the “on” position.
C. Press and hold the programming button. After 10 seconds the horn will chirp and the lights will flash 3 times.
D. Release the programming button.
E. Press and release the programming button again. The horn will chirp and the lights will flash 4 times indicating the system has entered Option Bank 1.
C. Press and release the programming button again. The horn will chirp and the lights will flash 5 times indicating the system has entered Option Bank 2.
D. Advance to option 2 by pressing and releasing the brake pedal 2 times.
The horn will chirp and the lights will flash 2 times indicating sthe system is at option 2.
E. Start the vehicle with the key. The horn will chirp and the lights will flash once approximately every 3 seconds indicating a valid tach signal.
F. Once the engine has settled to a normal idle speed, press and release the
brake pedal to set the tach rate. G.Turn the ignition off. Note: If the system is not chirping the horn and flashing the lights every 3 seconds after the ignition has started, the system is not seeing a valid tach signal. Check your tach connection (Dk Blue/Yellow at coil). Repeat the Tach Rate Programming procedure.
Tach Rate Programming must be done before the SKREEM learn procedure.
4. SKREEM Transponder Interface Programming. 2 programmed Sentry keys are required for this step!
NOTE: Review and understand steps A-J prior to performing.
A. Close hood.
B. Insert one of the two valid Sentry Keys into the ignition switch and turn the ignition switch to the “on” position.
C. After the ignition has been activated for more than 3 seconds (but no more than 15 seconds), cycle the ignition switch back to the “off” position. Remove the key and keep it at least 2 feet away from the ignition switch.
D. Within 15 seconds of removing the first key, insert the second valid Sentry Key into the ignition switch and turn the ignition switch to the “on” position.
E. Approximately 10 seconds after the ignition has been activated by the second Sentry Key, the dash theft-security light will start to flash, and a single audible chime (not the key-in-cylinder chime) will sound to indicate that the system has entered “Customer Learn” programming mode.
F. Cycle the ignition switch back to the “off” position. Remove the key and keep it at least 2 feet away from the ignition switch. Theft-security light will turn off.
G.Press and release the programming button located on the custom harness.
H. Within 60 seconds, press the start button on the remote start transmitter
(2) times.
I. Approximately 10 seconds after completion of Step H, a single audible chime will sound and the theft-security light will stop flashing and stay on solid for 3 seconds, and then turn off to indicate that the SKREEM Interface module has been successfully programmed.
J. The system will remote start the engine approximately 15 seconds after Step H. Press the brake pedal to shut down the remote start system. Note:
In some vehicles, during the SKREEM Interface learn procedure, the vehicle will start and stall on the first remote start attempt. The second remote start attempt will be successful. This is a normal condition of the learn procedure. If the vehicle does not start, refer to the Troubleshooting guide on page 16.
Once a SKREEM Interface Module has been programmed to a WCM/vehicle, it is permanently assigned to that WCM/vehicle and cannot be used on any other WCM/vehicle.
