View Full Version : APS Converter is in! First Impressions....
Well, the APS converter is now installed snuggly into my 5.7 Charger since Tuesday. It was snowing and raining hard for the whole 4 hour drive home, so the only thing I could compare to stock at that time was gas mileage. Since I made this exact trip only a month ago, I had a baseline to compare against, although with the weather - I expected to get lower mileage numbers. This wasn't the case though, as I did record about a 1 mpg improvement. Regular driving felt exactly like stock, with no spongy effect whatsoever. Couldn't tell it was even in there....
Now, since Thanksgiving day provided some beautiful weather here in the Carolinas, it was time to get to my little back road to try launching it. I don't have my Superchips installed, as I let a friend borrow it for a couple of days, so I couldn't compare data logging times. My average 60' times with the datalogger are between 2.07 and 2.1 (before the converter). So I stop in my usual spot, press the ESP off button (not the ESP delete yet), and then nail it. All I could do was laugh out loud, and say WOW!! Since my new cam/heads change, my car lost some low end power, which it doesn't make up till it gets up and over 3k rpms. The APS now gets me right into the 3k range almost instantly - and begins shredding the tires! The ESP delete button then made me feel much better about bringing some DR's home with me also - as the rear end practically gets sideways now when nailing it from a stop - again getting instantly into the 3k range, and pulling hard all the way. I'll be getting the SC tune back in today, and get some datalogging comparisons later on.....
So far, SOP tells me this is the best mod yet - and makes me feel MUCH better about the Head/Cam combo now, and consider this a must have for such a combo. Even the hooligan in me finds it to be quite fun!

How much higher is the stall?
How much higher is the stall?
It's a 2600 stall, which produces no codes - and feels just like stock when not pounding it. We were considering a 2800 stall at first, but wanted to make sure we didn't piss HAL off.

Whats stock? 2200?
I believe stock is somewhere between 1800-2100....

2100 would make sense, thats how far Hennesy got before HAL freaked. Thats why he offered only a +500.
Stock may have a 2100 stall, but if you nail it from a stop, it doesn't jump right up to that 2100. Even though this converter is only 500 more of stall, it jumps right to the 2600 rpm mark when nailing it from a stop. I'm now wondering how the HEAT TCM would react with this converter? At this point however, traction will be the greatest issue. APS said they are running a 2800 stall converter in an LX, also with no codes - but that may be bordering on impossible traction (with my setup anyway).

Just got the Heat TCM installed today they said it would take about 200 miles of driving fot the computer to adjust but what I felt so far I drove around about 30 miles when I got home from work and with normal driving it didn't feel much different but what did change was the hesitation with a straight punch where I used to have to give it a little power brake to get the wheels going now with a straight punch they lit up.The launch is much better and it seemed to hit harder when changing gears at WOT. We are going to Dragway 42 tomorrow so I'll see if I beat my 13.97. It may be a little warmer out tomorrow than when I had that but we will see if it helped.
Well - Got the Flashpaq back in the car, and went back to my 60' testing spot. Now keep in mind, this is the exact same little spot in the road that before the converter I was averaging about 2.07's, with my best being 2.05. Tonight, I ran 4 times, and got between 1.78 and 1.92, with a 1.81 and 1.88 in the middle! If I figure a good 1.85 average is .2 faster than I was. .2 in the quarter mile should figure out to be a bit over .3 or better. I was also getting these times while spinning the tires, so I'm quite sure I'll have some impressive times with the drag radials on there.
Now, before anyone questions a 1.7x 60' time, I know that the Superchip may not be totally accurate with that time, but the .2 difference was with both times read from the SC, so that should be accurate. I'll have track times to show on December 2nd......
In any case, This is definitely a great mod for the money! Although it can become quite expensive replacing tires!!

Sounds promising...keep us posted. I had Waynes converter on my truck and was running 1.8's with street tires. I talked to him about 2 weeks ago about my needs also...I may wait for Precision though...I need a 3000-3500 stall. Screw HAL...CEL's don't worry me as long as it doesn't limp.

I sure wish I had enough power to need a 3k stall!
Dookie, has your car been over to Kelly yet for tuning? I hear through the grapevine that he's on the cutting edge of a few breakthroughs for these cars! Interested to see how things turn out.....
:)
Just had the chance to run it a bit, and realized another great benefit to the new converter - nice quick, firm shifts! My car, even with the flashpaq, always had a slow, long shift. That's gone now, at both WOT and spirited driving.
:)
Oh - And I have a video to show the jump up to 2600 rpms, and the nice shift! Just waiting for it to be "Optimized" on Streetfire, then I'll come back and post the link for it....
Here it is..... (http://videos.streetfire.net/video/bb315e65-0257-4a82-bfbf-988401055643.htm)

Yup...We just got back from an AWESOME weekend in Houston with Kelly and Lisa...two wonderful people. Kelly and I worked on my car all day Saturday with my better half telling us we were doing it wrong ;) I drove home and had a 3mpg increase in fuel consumption. :) I learned ALOT from Kelly about our cars and the ECM. He boggled my mind with his wealth of knowledge.
My car is running very clean and very strong now, thanks to the modifications we did...No dieing at a stop light, no hunting for idle speed, no timing retard and no eratic a/f ratios....just smooth and strong....best thing i could have ever done was trust Kelly @ HEAT with my car. The guy is good.
I dunno what you've heard, but NO ONE has the know how Kelly does. The stuff we did would freak you out.

I've heard exactly what you just confirmed! I'm just sitting here on the sidelines waiting for Kelly to start showing us how to make these cars really run!!

i wrote those posts on the other thread asking for dates on the pcm/tcm release.....i won't order till i see a real date. and this brings me to my problem......i am starting to wonder if i should just go with the "other" tcms that are available. i will still stick with the mopar pcm and cam (i can wait a few months for those mods) but this torque converter - I MUST HAVE IT NOW!!!!
i have an install partially setup, so if the converter comes in before christmas i should have it the weekend of christmas (merry xmas to me, merry xmas to me!!!) if it takes longer then i am well into january before an install time.
ua - what really sold me on the converter is this site....www.apsprecion.com and doing an internet search of "5.7 aps converter." the truck guys who have done this absolutely love this mod and love this particular product! so i put in my oder from moparsupercenter.com and just waiting till monday to get my confirmation. like i said before, i am really stoked about this mod. i am slowly moving away from the everyday "bolt ons" into "bolt ins".

GoDaddy - If you're planning on sticking with the Mopar PCM, then you'll want to go with the Mopar TCM also, as they're designed to work together. Not sure how the Mopar PCM would play with one of the other TCM's. If you do go with an alternate TCM (which seem to be working real nice), I would go with the B&G flash to go with it. The latest B&G, along with the HEAT or HHP TCM should work wonders. I'm hoping the Mopar combo will be as good, so I'm patiently waiting....

that is exactly what is in the back of my head nagging me! it shouldn't be too long......i guess. i just hate waiting! that is half the reason i stopped visiting this site so frequently....i was tired of waiting for new stuff to come out and i really don't want to be the guinea pig. i am still dissappointed in superchips (it's my opinion and i am sticking with it - it had its ups.....but to me more downs). so i sold it with the idea that the torque converter, tcm, pcm and camshaft would be a MUCH better deal.
i am still sold on the mopar combo just from what bearmandog said about his car not unlearning the aggressive behavior. that to me is worth the price of admission. and based on what you have said and what i have read the torque converter from aps should rock on take off!

just an aside - i was impressed by infernAl's video of his stage 1 tcm....it really sounded like it was shifting crisp. nothing like my dog. with a tcm and the converter - the 5.7s should be very impressive at take off!

Godaddy, I am in the same boat. I can't wait to get these installed. The one difference is that I will be paying 1200+ for install. I really only want to pay that once and get the CAM and TC installed at the same time. I am trying to be patient and wait for the MOPAR parts... but that's getting hard.
I have already ordered the full MOPAR package (PCM/CAM/TCM/TC) but am now thinking I may switch out the actual converter with the APS one. Looking on that website, it does sound like a better converter.
Aaargh. What to do?!

well, since you are asking:grin: .......
i would get the aps converter. you will satisfy the instant gratification "need" that is a part of all of us performance junkies. i would start checking around town on the install costs. the cam and converter are in 2 totally different locations so i am not sure you would "really" see any savings. you have to get the car on a lift and drop the tranny.....where as a cam you can just do it all on the ground. i have friends in the right places so this will cost me (well, we haven't determined the true "cost") may have to wine and dine my friend....lmao!
i have looked at the install from the service manual. it really doesn't look that hard. until my buddy offered i was going to do it at home. now the cam, that is an all around different job. i told my buddy i would tear the car down for him but he is doing the actual install for the cam (i will just watch). that is a truly labor intensive job.
get the aps converter! hell, madc made me get one!

http://www.chargerforums.com/forums/images/icons/icon4.gif New Performance Torque Coverter
New for the 5.7L and 6.1L LX Bodies and Grand Cherokee SRT-8. We are now a APS Torque Converter Dealer and look what we have helped bring to the market for you. The APS Torque Converter is very streetable as it relies on a different impeller to not just spacing the members further apart to get additional stall like so many rely on. We also use a Hardened Input Shaft Spline Insert, upgraded friction from paper (OEM) to Kevlar or Solid Carbon-Fiber depending on stall, as well as machine the slight taper off the apply surface for a firmer lock up...resulting in increased top end efficiency. We also increase torque multiplication over the stock unit, meaning we multiply the amount of Torque the unit will put to the back tires delivering EXCITING performance. This is done by using a higher stall stator and a negative raked impeller...these are not just a simple, modified, factory converter with loose tolerances to give you a higher stall effect. These factors all add up to give you the APS EDGE! Getting the EDGE in performance while maintaining efficiency for fuel economy and peppy around town driving. We increase the efficiency of the torque converter over the stock unit by a full 6% (stock rating is approximately 14% parasitic loss just from the converter). This means that you don't get that "spongy" feeling under light acceleration found in other high-stall converters. Our converters can easily handle horsepower ratings of 600+!
Features of the APS Converter:
American Made Ticker Taped Torrington Style Roller Bearings .
Fully Brazed Impeller and Turbine Fins .
Input Splines are Heat Treated Chrome Moly 4130 .

I haven' read through the entire thread, so it may have been mentioned.
Precision Industries is coming out with thier converter SOON...3000-3500 stall, and NO CEL. They are doing testing now...the guy doing the testing went from a 1.98 60' to a 1.76 60' but lost 2 mph up top...they are redoing the effiencency of the impeller to regain what they lost to perfect it, and will release for sale by next year...Precision makes THE best converters for GM and FORD applications...shaving .5-.7 off a time slip.
Not trying to take away from the APS (I had one in my 5.7 Ram)...it's a well built product, but needs more stall IMO...the one i had in my Ram took ALOT of abuse and held up very well.

After i first installed, i was getting P2099 and P2098 (rich and lean codes) instead of P0420 & P0430 (cat. eff.). I called Scott and he told me to check the hot and ground connections and let him know if i had any more problems...Knock on wood...none yet (about 300 miles).

and can you imagine the kick back on take off!!! this with one of the performance tcms (preferably the mopar) should be unbelievable at take off.
personally, i want traction to be a problem....it means the power is at least getting to the wheels. right now i don't feel that the power is getting ot the wheels so i have no issues with traction on take off. does that make sense?
also, just got a pm from moparsupercenter - my aps converter should ship from aps by the end of the week!!!!

No word from them on my order..drat!.....I am going nuts here...I have PP heads & intake sitting at my dealer...the install was scheduled for today but the dang cam has not even shipped yet..DANG...I cannot wait to mash the go peddle after these installs......
....traction...I had issues with that this summer at the track...got better with practice but needed to do some more but the track closed for winter...
BTW...I have never driven a hi-stall converter car before...do you just punch the throttle to the floor at launch or roll into it trying to avoid wheel spin like I do now?..

Hey TN, which cam are you going with?
If you're spinning now, you'll really spin with the converter. You'll definitely need drag radials for track use, or you'll just sit there 'n spin......

I ordered the cam from FastMatt (dynamic racing)..same one they did with the EKOOL's Jeep....the PP heads came from Jeremy at Power Port Perf.....BTW..Matt called me today..cam will be in my hands tomorrow....car goes under the knife..err..wrench Thursday morning....:)
Wheel spin....a good problem to have to deal with.:) ...so you are saying start saving for the DRs before the track opens next spring?...

Ah yes - Nice choice (as if you SRT guys aren't fast enough!)
Yep - I'd be saving my pennies for the DR's, as you'll definitely need 'em. If I'm not mistaken, I thought I saw a ways back that PowerWagon was selling his M&H setup, which would go perfectly on the SRT! :)
