What's the game plan for you snow belt owners?
New rims and tires?
Wait till next year and run on the stock tires?
Same rims with winter tires?
Plan A for me: Seperate set of rims with winter tires. Keep the stock tires on the stock rims and store for the spring.
Plan B: Do nothing. Use the stock setup for my first winter.
Plan C: Put winter tires on the stock rims. Get seperate rims and tires for Summer.

I have 2 other vehicles to choose from - Another Hemi - Ram pick-up, or 99 Olds Aurora.... So the Daytona will not see snow or bad weather.

Great, so far everybody has another car except me. Next thing I'll have all the warm climate people checking in about how they don't need to worry.

I don't have to worry, I have pland D!
I'll use the same wheels and tires untill the tires need replacing. It's just transportation for me. ;)

I'll be going with plan C. It's just a matter of getting the cash together before it snows on Monday.

Just get yourself some hurricane tires and then you never have to stop driving.

NECharger,
I lived in the snow belt up until 4 years ago... if I still lived up north... well for one... I would probably still be driving 4wd trucks LOL, but aside from that I would throw a set of Blizzacks on the stock rims, or find a set of stock rims and tires on ebay for cheap and put snow tires on the rims, and ebay off the stock tires...

If the tires that come on the RT w/Road & Track are that bad, then I will put snows on the rear tires. I don't believe there is much to gain with snow tires in the front. Being that my wife will be driving the car, I don't forsee her making major trips in snow storms. She doesn't work. She will just stay inside until the roads are clean.

so as long as the back tires are able to grip it does not matter if you can steer or not?
I know that "back in the old days" people ony did the 2 back tires... but even with my trucks I always did 4 snow tires... being able to move doesn't help you if you can't steer....

I have custom rims on now. I plan on putting the stock RT rims back on for the winter (maybe late November) with still undetermined (better) all season tires. Being from Rhode Island winter can be either good or bad. I had a BMW 740IL up until I bought the Charger, with the low profile tires and RWD it was like a snow coaster until I put a winter tire package on.

Do yourself a huge favor and spring for 4 snow tires. It is much safer and keeps the car balanced.

Isn't it fun how much a difference real snow tires make?
I had a 5.0 Mustang that could do unbelievable U turns in the snow until I put some Blizzaks on it!

If someone finds a good set in the R/T's size post it. I tried the one recommendation for Goodyear triple treads but they dont come in our size yet.
I'd like to get a really good all season

odd as it sounds... look at blizzacks for trucks...
the daytona size 235's blizzak offers as an LT tire...

You make a good point, I thought about that after I posted on whether I needed front snows too. As you say "back in the old days" was the last time I had a rear wheel drive car to drive in the snow (IROC Z). I bought my RX8 last fall, but that car hasn't and will not see the snow or bad weather. I guess with the Charger I (really my wife) will need to relearn old driving habits.

If you only go with 2 snow tires and take a turn in the snow at any moderate speed the fronts are going to wash out on you.

I plan on using my OEM wheels/tires as my winter tires. This way they can get all messed up. When the summer comes around, I'll get some new rims and tires for summer use only.

I'll drive the charger through the winter except for the sloppy days. I have a 4x4 for those days.
I'll run the factory rims year round till they get pitted. At that point I'll purchase new rims for the summer.

Did you see the difference in tread between the truck Blizzak and the HP car version? Does anyone know of any other 235/55/18 snow tires or what size we can use on our rims that will be comparable?

The problem with this is the OEM tires are all season, so they aren't as good for winter driving as winter tires. The first winter I was thinking mine would have adequate tread, but I wouldn't think they would be much good the following winter. The other issue is that winter tires have better traction in cold temps than the stock tires.

I have yet to see any high peformance all season tire as being good in the snow. That's the problem with all season, they are a compromise between amazing dry handling (Ultra HP Summer) and superb winter handling (inlcuding rain).

I don't think you have any shot of safe driving with the stock tires in the snow in Minnesota!
Spend the dough and get 4 real snow tires - especially since you already have the Pirellis for the other seasons.
The Contis have a snow rating of 5.8 from Tire Rack which is pretty poor even compared to other all season tires. For example,
Michelin Pilot A/S 7.2
Goodyear Eagle GT-HR 6.8
BFG KDWS 6.2

Sloppy days, I will work from home and call for delivered pizza for dinner.
The wife has a Denali. She can go out to the grocery store in bad weather to buy more tp & bread.

I'm sure it's do-able. How it effects the ride and the road noise is my concern. I'm sure they will be awesome chewing through snow.

Why would I want to take off the stock Daytona rims for 6 months a year, when I am only leasing the car for three years.

Since I live in Canada, I always run Winter tires. I always get a second set of rims for the tires. It's alot easier. When I bought my Charger three weeks ago, I made sure that Winter tires and rims were part of the purchase. The dealer told me that he couldn't tell me right away what type of tires I would be getting which scared me a bit. I just had this vision of the Walmart specials or something. Anyway I went to pick them up yesterday and I was a bit surprised that they were Pirelli Winter tires. I put the on today and had them out on the highway. Not noisy at all. I'll keep you posted on how they do in the ice and snow. I don't think it will be long now......

yep, my baby will be covered too, in the process of getting the old 97 Honda Passport already to go for the next 4 to 6 months. That thing loves to be driven in the snow. :-) For those sunny cold days when the snow is all melted and the road is dry, the cover will come off and I will drive her.
My buddy at work has a 300 C, he drives it all year long and he thinks I am crazy not to drive the charger in the winter but, to me, the charger ain't no 300 c. :-)
Maybe if I had went the leased route I would be more inclined to drive it in the winter, just can't bare the thought of driving my baby in the deep snow and ice.
