I am getting my first oil change tomorrow at a car garage by my work. I am going to get Synthetic OIl and was wondering if they will aks me about a certain TYPE or are they all the same? I thought I saw different numbers on the bottles of the oil in the stores.

If you have a 5.7L Hemi, then you want 5W20 weight oil. I was buying Mobil1 at Walmart until the last change when I bought Quantum Blue from *** Automotive in 5W20 grade.

If you have a 6.1L SRT8, then I believe the specified grade of oil is synthetic 0W40... again Mobil1 or other reputable brand.

*** Quick Hijack ***

Tim...Saturday I'm going to have my car dynoed again at Akron Horsepower
to test what benefit the Quantum Blue oil, coolant and ACE's fuel additives
by themselves will have produced. I'll keep you in the loop.

*** Back to your regularly scheduled thread ***

For our R/T's Hemi you got to have Synthetic and it must be 5W20 for the MDS.

No, I don't believe in the standard Hemi (not the SRT) that synthetic is required...although most of the posters here use it, me included. The owners manual does not require synthetic in a regular Hemi, so I guess it's overkill. But, for me, I can run the synthetic 8000-10,000 miles between changes, which is 3 months or so and that convenience and lack of hassle makes the extra cost balance out. To answer your question, your engine will do just fine on coventional motor oil as long as it's 0W20 (for the MDS), as the manual states.

You're kidding about that right? You know about viscosity and temperature ranges, right? It's explained in your owners manual.

BTW, GoofyTimL, SRT-8s take 0W-40 from Mobil 1. Not sure who else has it and others substitute 5W-40.

Never read it. Only used it if I couldn't figure something out. ANd I was asking what people use not what the book says.

You do everything by the book, SON?

Asking what's the "best" oil is like asking what's the best religion or the best political party.

What is important is that ANY name-brand synthetic is better than any dino-oil. And using the right viscosity (5W20 for the Hemi, 10W30 for the 3.5L (I think!) and 0W40 for the 6.1L) is important, whether it's dino or synth. Don't cheap-out on oil!

For me, I can get 5W20 Mobil1 at the local supermarket (Meijer) for ~$5.50/qt, so that's what I use. Many feel it's perhaps not the best (preferring Amsoil or Royal Purple, say) and maybe they're right, but since I change it every 3-5k miles, I don't think the extra money and hassle of getting those oils is worth any incremental advantage those other oils might provide. It's simply a cost/benefit optimization for me. :)

So why did you write, "I thought I saw different numbers on the bottles of the oil in the stores." ?? Like you have no idea what they mean?

In that case, if you couldn't figure it out, you should read it.

Does the 5W-20 give you guys enough heat protection?? 20 seems awfully low or is that just a winter weight for the 5.7s?

Nope. It a year-round spec, AFAIK. I haven't heard of any hemis burning up from inadequate lubrication at high temps. Yet. And there're PLENTY of hemi LX's in AZ and FL (all the old people there like 'em!).

Next time I'll look in my owners manual to see the ratings! LOL!!

GUys Mobile 1 Synthetic here and K&N filter a must. 5W-20 is fine, I can bounce for that I am in Laredo (Spicy Border) and on a cool day it may 100 Degrees. Right now I think we are at 95 due to cold front that recently came by

My 107 GMG pass the first revision here in Madrid in an oficial Dodge-Chrysler and they put Mobil 1 5/20 synthetic and they told me that I can run 20.000km to the next revision, 12.5 k miles aprox.
