The best I have found so far is the mequires (sp?) stage 1 for small scratches and swirl marks. It is very easy to use and works pretty good. Follow it with stage 2 and 3 and your set. Just my opinion though. I'm sure you'll get lots of other options.

To prevent swirl the car must be washed properly!
Swirls are nothing more than organized scratches.
Wash with care!
I use the "two bucket method"
One bucket for soapy water, the other (5 gallon) to rinse the mit off.
You dont end up rubbing the grime into your paint.
as for the buffing question.
Quality microfiber, keep them clean. Buy a bunch so you can always have fresh ones.
Wash often and dont use fabric softener when drying

dont wax or wash in circles. it doesnt help anything besides swirls. and like jaun said keep your stuff clean. i have a different mit for my wheels and wash them with a seperate bucket of soap and water. i clean my mit with the hose constantly. microfiber mits will turn different colors when they get any dirt on them.
also for swirls, you are trying to wash it, not scrub it.
my car thanks to the dealer is full of swirls, all i can do is make sure it doesnt get worse and do what i can to make them better.

I'm with Bill. It's all about proper washing and the right materials.

the mentioned 2 bucket washing, using only MF or lamps wool wash mit, if you drop it, get a new one.
As to removing swirls there are a few ways 1 is a lot easier than the other :)
For ease I suggest getting a Porter Cable 7336 or 7424 Dual Action Polisher/Sander the only differnace between those 2 is hows it packaged.
If you want to get a better warrante get the Meguiars G-100 same as above but life time warrante.
Depending on how bad the swirls are start with a WASH, Clay Bar, then the PC
First working a 12"x12" area start with a 8006 Pad and #80 Sped Glaze
put a small bead around the outer edge, work it into the area on speed 5 and overlapping by 50% work North South and East West until it goes clear. DO NOT WORK to a dry buff, would want to remove it while its still wet.
Take a MF towel and wipe the area clean and look at how the swirls and scratches look, if they made a big improvment do another application of the #80 in teh same area and see if that takes care of it. If not you may needto use #83 and another 8006 pad.
Work that the same way you did the #80 that will take care of most light swirling and scratches. Personally I go from 83 to 80 to #7 then wax or sealant. I have started using the #21 Syntetic Sealant on my Brilliant Black Magnum with great results. NXT also works very well.
You can apply the #7 Show Car Glaze with a 9006 pad at speed 3 or by hand with a foam aplicator the wax I use the PC with 9006 pad speed 3 to remove the wax I use a 7006 pad ( very stiff ) with a Micro Fiber bonnet on speed 5 and if you put the wax on thin like you should take no longer than 10-15 minutes to dewax haze the car.
A good place for getting Meguiars stuff Auto Detailing Solutions (http://autodetailingsolutions.com/Meguiar's%20New%20Products%20&%20Specials.htm)
Once you get up on the finish and when I do one of my full on wash/clay/paint cleaner/polish/glaze/wax/wax days its a solid 12 hours BUT after that I am only doing washes and basic wax upkeep. 2-3 hours wash/spary wax or new wax
Feel fre to PM me if you have any questions.

What they said but please, 200 dollars later and 5 hours of detailing w/a porter cable have taught me, DO NOT use an applicator pad (for wax) that is rough to the touch. See my Hologram post lol.
Good luck.

What do you all use for washing? Meguiars has a "Versa-Angle Body Brush" and "Microfiber Quik Detail Pad".

I typically use what ever I find on sale First time it was Meguiars Deep Crystal Car Wash this newest bottle is Gold Class Car Shampoo I think.
I use a MF Towel or 2, or a lambs wool mitt was suggest at the detailing class i went to.
I have also used 100% Terry Cloth Wash Cloths/Hand Towels I am not talking Target cheapies here I am talking $15-$20 a towel 100% cotton including the edging material.
Use 2 buckets, 1 soapy water 1 clean rinse water, never use anything you have dropped on the ground.
Have fun !
