Is Anyone Else Having A Problem With Their Trunk Lid Scratching Their Rear Bumper On Their Chargers? I Have A Daytona And I Just Sent It Back To The Dealer To Have The Trunk Lid Adjusted And The Bumper Repainted.

If I recall correctly, there's a whole thread on this. Might be in the general section. Try a search, otherwise someone may be able to come up with a direct link to it....and a quick search on general forum for trunk bumper yielded the link

I rented a Charger this past week & saw the same problem.
Magnums have a similar problem with the lift gate.

Took mine to the dealer a few days ago. Then to the body shop. I believe they simply placed a spacer under the passenger side rubber gromet. Problem gone.

I just had my 3000 mile service and had the dealership look at these scratches. They came to the conclusion that the trunk shocks on my R/T are not the same as the Daytonas' they had on the lot.Apparently the Daytona trunk shocks are stronger than mine, so when I had a spoiler put on, I should have replaced the shocks also. Here is the Part number they gave for the Daytona shocks:4814200AF-$19.00 each.Any other Daytona owners have this problem, and if you do are your shock part numbers the same as above? I don't want to have to replace the parts if they are not the cause of the problem. Will somebody please post pics of the location of the added washers to fix this problem? Thanks guys.

I have a Daytona and I have the same problem.... The rubber spacer on the bottom of the trunk lid isn't big enough.

I have the same issue, when I took it in for the couple other things I had wrong, they buffed it out and then MOVED the trunk lid about 3/16 of an ince to the right (since the mark was on the left). Well its a good thing I have to go back for a new headlight anyway cause that looks awfull, a large gap on the left and a real small one on the right - Jerks!
I think the next time I go in I'll have to speak directly to the mechanic on this one as it seems whoever worked on it this time doesn't understand the issue.

:) :) :) Thats why I love this forum! This thread alerted me of the problem and when I took my RT in for spoiler I told body guy the problem and he put in slightly bigger spacers. Thx Charger forums.com!

Only 500 miles here. I found the marks this weekend. I put felt pads over them to prevent the situation from worsening before I take it back to the dealer. Seems to be ok so far, except for the fact I have little felt pads stuck to my bumper!!!

I was not having the scratch issue previously, but now that I look a few weeks later, sure enough, the trunk scratches the bumper. Will contact Dodge.

I would not only find a new dealer. I would also report that service manager to DCX. The toll free number is in the back of your owners manual.
Sorry you had to be told this, some service guys are just there for a pay check and do not really care about customer service.

i agree completely. my service dept is incredible. i walked in and told my guy that i need to replace a fog lamp - it has a little moisture. he jumps on the computer and orders me one without looking at it......i am not lying obviously but he took real good care of me. now i am up there pretty often showing them the upgrades and all, but that was service. i will go to them for any needs (including oil change). i will always pay a little bit more than usual if i am treated wonderfully.
moral of the story - report these guys. that is bad service. they should exhaust everything to try before giving up and then send it to a body shop to have a professional figure it out. my exteneded 2 cents.

The stealer did turn it over to the body shop who said they could do nothing about it, they said they looked at other cars and they were all the same.
They did say maybe dodge would come out with an official fix.
Using two felt pads (one on each side) on the pieces that the rubber on the trunk makes contact with; I belive will keep it from making contact, I am no longer able to push down on the trunk to make contact.
I have also ordered stiffer thicker rubber pieces for the trunk lid, I blelive the problem is that the oem pieces "give" to much upon closing the trunk and or driving.

Because other cars on there lot have the same problem does not make it OK. Your paint is scratched and it was caused from your trunk not being installed correct. I am sure that with all the members on here that have had it fixed that DCX is aware of the problem. I do not know were you are from but I am sure there is another dealer close enough for you to go there. This fix should not be at your expense.

My dealer rubbed out the scratches and offered to paint the bumper but I can't see painting the bumber if DCX hasn't come up with a harder grommet or other fix.
The real problem is that if the rub/scratch goes through the clear coat then moisture can get under it. When (not if) this happens then the clear coat will turn white and start to flake off.
If you've ever seen an older car that has a white coloring comming down from one of the door windows, than you've seen this. It's caused by a cheap paint job where the bodyshop did not remove and install the door hardware. When the tape was removed after paint/clearcoat, it left an open edge for moisture get under . . .

- I heard back, from the Service Manager, at "my" dealer, about this - and he said that he got word from the Dodge/Chrysler engineers, that they would have a FIX out soon for this. From what I heard, the fix will be adjustable replacement rubber "stoppers", to replace the little/enemic stoppers that are currently being used.

I know it's not the answer, but I also started to see some scuff marks on the left side only, with 700 miles. Working for dealers for over 20 years, and knowing what goes on, the last thing I wanted to do was have the dealer re-spray the cover for what would be a definite paint mismatch. So what I did, was to hand buff the scuff out, and cut a very small piece of clear vinyl "screen protector" material (used to protect palm & pocket pc screens), and applied it to the effected area. The vinyl is virtually undetectable, and will provide the barrier between the lid and cover. Just my 2 cents, not to mention that "Dealer fixes" usually cause more problems than my time is worth, i.e. new style rubber bumper, will now cause a water leak, realigning the decklid, scratching the painted bolts, etc...

Update:
I drove my Daytona over 200 miles yesterday, once home, I looked at the little protector piece I put over the scuff, much to my surprise, it worked great. It didn't peel off, there were no marks on it, and best of all, it did it's job protecting the paint. You can't even see it on there.

I had the same problem, 5500 miles. Dealer in Madison, WI said they think it's actually the rear facia (bumper) actually doesn't have enough of a gap, so the trunk lid rubs down on it. They say the fix is to widen the gap, pulling the bumper down a bit. Don't know if it's true or not, but Dec 26 I'm taking it in for them to try it. There is actually a service notice on the bumper gap problem.
Also, when I was having the body shop take a look at the car, another charger owner was coming in. Some jerkoff spraypainted gang symbols on his car. He was in to have that repaired. I asked to look at his trunk--same problem, 2000 miles, had it a month. Now he's having both done.
Seems to be a very common problem.

If you have a spoiler it way be coming in under that. The Daytona spoilers don't have a seal to stop the water.

Nope no spoiler. its the oddest thing man, it can rain and rain and wont leak. Put inthe touchless wash...everything gets wet. Temp solution? Get off my lazy butt and wash it myself.
