first of all there are multiple choices on programming your homelink system in your charger owner's manual. from my reading i did not find a suitable solution.

i have a sears rolling code garage door opener that is about 1 year old. the standard process for programming has always been to clear the channels (pressing and holding button I and III for 20 seconds), then pressing the program button on the garage door opener the pressing button (I) sometimes for a few seconds.

after erasing all three of my garage door transmitters and keypad and locking the garage shut (lol just my day!!). i have figured out how to program the new charger homelink system (which is advanced to a level of overkill!!).

first i got back into the garage with the by-pass cable. i re-programmed all three transmitters.
second thing i did was program one of the transmitters to the homelink in the charger. this step does not open the garage or close it.
third step is to now program the homelink (with the transmitter code already in it) to the garage door opener by pressing the program button on the garage door and within 30 seconds pressing button number (I) on the homelink.

it now works!! with one little side effect. when using the sears transmitters i could open and close the garage door and pause the door while going up or going down and if i hit the button again the door would go up. this is no longer the case with the homelink in the charger. the door fully cycles fully up or fully down with no ability to pause the door let alone reverse the direction.

this posed a slight problem because i have a laser that lets you know when to stop so as not to hit the end of the garage or have the rear end hanging out of the garage (tight fit for the charger). from when you put the charger in park there is a slight roll back that happens and when i hit the button the garage door almost came down on the back end of the car. luckily i had the stock sears remote close by to stop the door. the safety light runs right under the bumper so the beam was not broken.

other than that it is functional and has great range.

Don't you lose the "rolling code" feature on the opener by using the car's unit? At least this was the case with my Marauders.

i don't think so, then again i have a rough grasp on how rolling code works.

I also had trouble programming my Genie Intellicode and I followed the instructions to a T. Turned out my problem was I was using the keychain transmitter to train. As soon as I used my wifes full size transmitter - worked like a charm.

I just programmed my Homelink.

-First clear channels by holding the outer buttons for 20 seconds
-Hold the Garage remote next to any home link button
-Press the remote and Homelink button at the same time, It will train.
-Now press the "learning button" on your garage opener unit.
-now press/hold/release your homelink button for two seconds, a second time and a third time.

Then your done, good luck

For my situation, I have a sears craftman garage door opener. The easy way for me was to clear the channels, hold the 1 button on my car homelink until it enters learning mode, then just point to garage remote to it and it trained it. very simple.

All I had to do on my rolling code garage was reset the homelink with the 1 and 3 buttons then put it into training mode. point the remote at it then go to the motor in the garage and press the orange training button on the back. This is listed in the manual. I didn't have to reprogram the remotes that came with it at all. and I can stop and reverse the door opener mid close.

YES!! Thank you. You are correct! You must do BOTH programming steps in order. First train homelink with the remote, then program it with the learning.

Most in-car programming does not require the first part. But you must train the homelink with the remote door opener first! Then you can proceed to the learning. It is somewhat confusing.

I just did this homelink programming successfully with a rolling code Genie garage door opener. And now the homelink works just like any other opener – it will stop and start the door in mid-cycle, either up or down.

Thank you again.
