View Full Version : Dodge Charger vs Toyota Yaris?!?

Okay, My In-laws were...well...let's just say that they were "less than thrilled" that my wife and I bought a Charger. We even bought the V6 so we wouldn't hear complaints about speed and gas mileage. (When I say "we" I mean "she" as in, my wife.)
So they are on the market right now for a new car and test drove a Yaris.
They started spouting things like:
"It's really fast!"
"It gets like 50MPG!"
"It will outlast your Charger!"
"Those things are death traps!"
etc. etc. etc.
So...without just blatantly laughing in their faces. How should I respond?
I figured you all could have some fun with this.
Keep in mind that these are people who think that my 2004 Dodge Neon SXT is a "Sports Car."
EDITED for clarity: I realized that I didn't quite word that all correctly.

"Those things are death traps!"
Death Trap??? Show them some of the crash results of these cars. There have been a few on eBay where the entire front or rear of the car was GONE and the passenger compartment was untouched, lets see a tin can toy-ota do that...
Also, there have been reports of HEMI owners getting just as good (if not better) gas mileage compared to the V6 owners.

Understood - but at the end of the day, it really isn't anything to do with them! The Charger has an extremely strong shell and excellent impact results (other than side - but it's a big, heavy car - and no cars do that well TBH). It is half Mercedes - which (fingers crossed) is a good pedegree to be coming from. It is different - you stand out - it makes a statement (make of that what you will). It's not just a vehicle for 'transport', it is a great piece of machinery - well packaged, with good lines and a reasonable amount of grunt. It is not a 'sports car' per se.
At the end of the day, if they have no intention of being interested in what you have to say on your choice of vehicle, it won't matter what you actually say - it will be falling on deaf ears!
You could offer to ram them head on and see who comes off the best......but that's a little extreme.....

Hrmm...as someone who transitioned from a couple of fuel-efficient Toyota "Death Traps", I'd have a hard time keeping a straight face around your in-laws. While I find the Yaris ads cute, I wouldn't buy something because its cute. Also, anything with an engine can be viewed as "really fast". My Tercel could do 106 mph on the way up to Indiana easy. Does that make it competitive with my Charger? Or any Charger, um no.
Obviously your folks are delusional and ignorant to basic car physics, as anyone could tell you that a high-velocity impact would obliterate most "fuel-efficient" cars, while giving us big gas-hog owners an excuse for yet more modifications!

If they look at a Yaris next to a Charger and call the Charger a deathtrap, it ain't worth your time.

Remember, crash ratings are generated with impacts of similar sized vehicles. If a yaris and a charger were to crash into the same oncoming car, the yaris would sustain signifigantly heavier damage than the charger.
People see the 5-star ratings, but have no idea what it means.
Put me in a 2.25 ton low star rating car versus the greatest 1.5 ton 5-star anyday.

Why do you need thier approval anyway...prolly best to just smile and agree(sarcasticlly) they are right, and you made a big mistake buying a North American/European car...the Japanese have it firgured out much better, and we should all learn from thier many, many, many years of purchasing (insinuating old) and the information gathered and research you've done is probably biased to domestic vehicles. Basicaly, you are an idiot, and have proven it by buying a Charger...and marring thier daughter...TWO big mistakes...:)
cause Yaris sounds like Yanni and we all know he sucks
but seriously they probably assume its a gas guzzler since its a muscle car and they may need to be educated on its assets, safety, etc

lol . . . it's all about perception.
a lot of people (the majority; too-many) see cars as another tool, or another appliance. they use it to get from one place to another, and the nicer the interior is, the more they like the car. they couldn't give a rat's ass how it handles, or how hard it pulls, because they drive so domestically anyway.
they simply don't "get it". nor will they ever.
here's a similar, and recent conversation i had with my old friend's new girlfriend. i was talking about getting my car soon.
Her: "What are you getting?"
Me: "A Charger."
"What's that? Is it like an SUV or something?" (No idea why she would guess that)
"No, it's a muscle car."
"Oh. Is it expensive?"
"Well . . . sort of. But for what you get, it's a really good deal."
Then my friend points out a Mini Cooper. Then we discuss Minis and she says "Yeah, but they're pretty expensive."
My wife: "Actually, no, they're very affordable."
Me: "Yeah, they start around 20 or 21."
Her: "Well, that's still a lot of money."
Me: "Well, of course, but the average price for a new car today is like 25 or 26, so that's actually a great price for such a nice car."
Her: "Huh? I got my Honda Civic new just a year ago and I only paid 18"
Now I'm thinking a few things here . . .
Why the hell would you pay 18 for a Civic.
I said 'average price for a new car', not 'price for an average car.'
But my wife saved me from my mouth and interjected, explaining what "average price" means. :P
Point in case, some people see a Civic and a Charger, and they don't see any reason why one costs twice as much as the other.

Well, heres a few tid bits. First up is the safety section from Edmunds, the Charger weighs a hair less than 2,000lbs more. All else being equal, the greater mass wins any crash argument. Which vehicle do they want their grandkids in?
Yaris, curb weight, 2,400lbs (about 700 less than my Neon, for Crissakes)
(Note complete lack of crash test data, while the Charger has recieved 5 stars in the NHTSA testing)

1. Yaris won't outlast a Charger, moter is good for 100,000 miles at most (remember its reving 2x the chargers to go 60 mph (if it will go 60)
2. Let them by the Yaris, see if the clowns come with it or are they optional
3. 90% of the population can't pronounce "YAWR-ES" but 100% can say charger!
You can by a gocart that gets better milage thant he Yaris, and probably faster and safer too!

In August of this year, the Diamler product GEM will be street legal (in MN anyway) - battery powered golf cart w/ roll cage, winshield (and windshield wiper!), seat belts, horn, head/tail lights and brakelights and turn signals. Basically a small electric car. Get the one with the high output motor and put it in the "hi range" mode and you can get almost 50mph out of it with a travel distance of about 30 miles per charge. I'd say equal comparison to the Yaris...

Offer them a room at a local motel is a bad section of town. In-laws can sometimes blow. My wife's family are a bunch of "yellow dog" democrats and are always looking to start a political, anti-gun, what ever floats their boat argument. I usually advise them the same as I did my mother, "..do you like your grandchildren? Do you wish to ever see them again? If not, keep it up..." That ends all arguments.

LOL You guys(and gals) crack me up!
Whenever they start up, I usually just smile and say something along the lines of "It's a good thing you don't have to drive it then. Think about how much safer you are."
My wife LOVES digging the cars' accolades in their face. So she kinda brings all of this on herself. She sends them links for the Safety ratings, Forbes safest car list, That Sexiest car list. Basically anything that she can find.
Then they try and shoot back with things like.
"It's a lemon"
"It has no rear head room"
"Gas mileage is very poor"
And my personal favorite (particularly in the case of the Yaris)...
"It hasn't been out that long. They probably just haven't found out how unsafe it really is yet."
At the end of the day I'm glad they think it's a "death trap." My Mother In-Law is a smoker so if she's too scared to ride in it, then I don't have to worry about smoke in my car.
In a related story:
My wifes friend totaled her Hyundai Accent. Insurance screwed her over and left her with $3,000 for a new car. She looked at the Yaris (about the only new car in her price range) and hated it so bad that she stretched her budget to the max just to get a Caliber. She couldn't stand the thought of driving around in the Yaris.
Ultimately, I'm dealing with people who absolutely refuse to be wrong. So it doesn't matter if God came down and said "They made a good choice." They'd argue with him/her too.

Tell them if they want a REALLY safe car, I know where they can get a cheap, used Yugo with low miles.
Its so safe, you never have to worry about getting hit by another car, when they see you coming, they turn and run the other way. Single car accidents are virtually impossible because the car can't get enough speed (even down hill) to roll over, and if it ran head on into anything, there'd be no more than a scratch on the car (the object it ran into has the right to defend itself). These cars were so awesome, I dunno why they quit making them.

And you should have waited for the government to crash test that Toyota before getting behind the wheel.

Hell no. A 1.5L - 106 HP, even in this matchbox car will get you maybe 0-60 in 8 or 9 secs.

It's BUDGET Toyota... $13k for the high-end one. I akin it to the scions, rattle traps that are poor quality for Toyota, and I'd be shocked if it outlasted the Charger.

They're just trying to ruffle your feathers with that one... Compact vs. Full Size Sedan, no contest for safety. That like saying a Charger is going to do better in a collision than an Excursion.

If they think a Yaris is safer than a Charger, they're retarded and it's not worth trying to reason with them.
As for longevity, as them how many '60s Dodge Chargers they see on the road, then ask them how many '70s or '80s Toyotas they see on the road. Then, finally, ask them to compare production figures.
Nothing outlasts an American RWD car with a V8. Ask any cop or taxi driver.
EDIT: Also, regarding safety, point out that if a 4500 pound charger hits a 3000 pound Yaris head-on at 60 mph, the two cars will be moving in the direction the Charger was going at about 15 mph. Thus, the Charger will have sustained a 45 mph speed reduction while the Toyota a 75 mph speed reduction in the same time period. In an accident like that, you wouldn't even need an airbag in the Charger. If you were in the Toyota, you'd probably be dead even with an airbag.

Wow, that's just sad. When the neon sports were introduced back in 95 they ran an 8-flat 0-60 with almost the same HP and weight as a Yaris.... Whoa, just looked up the curb weight for a Yaris. 2369 pounds! So it's even lighter than a neon while running nearly 2 seconds slower to 60mph with nearly the same HP.
Even sadder.

No, No, No, No, No, No....
I bought the V6 to keep my wife happy. My wife would only be happy with something that had better gas mileage than our old van, was safer than our van and looked hot. We were about 2 steps from getting a Caliber. Luckily, she wanted to test drive a Charger before we commited to a purchase. She loved it. And I was happy to get ANY Charger.
Now that she's hooked, I'm working on getting the Hemi Charger.
I don't know how it is in your neck of the woods. But over here. Rule #1 is "Keep wifey happy."
Whatever wifey's motivation was for getting a new car is irrelevant. Rule #1 was in effect. (I think you can follow the politics of what I was dealing with here.)
But as all good girls do. She showed her parents waiting for a nod of approval...which she didn't get. It ate her up at first, but she's got a F' it attitude now.

Not that I feel that I need to explain myself but, you don't have all the information.
We had 2 cars. A '00 Dodge Caravan Sport and a '04 Dodge Neon SXT.
My Car = Dodge Neon SXT
Her Car = Dodge Caravan Sport
Caravan's warranty was just about up. So we traded it in for the Charger. (We won't say who is enjoying the Charger more though. )
So now:
My Car = Dodge Neon SXT
Her Car (Technically) = Dodge Charger SXT
When MY car's warranty is about up, I'm getting a Hemi. Probably a Daytona...depending on what colors are available then. It was her Caravan so it was her call. I just stood around and said "Get whatever you want." Like I said in my earlier post, we almost drove off in a Caliber.
She's a good sport though. She lets me mod "her" car for the most part. Though only cosmetically. She's not too keen on really expensive mods.
Next time, it's MY turn to pick. And I've told her in no uncertain terms "I want another Charger...but this time. We're getting a Hemi."
Now, you may feel free to judge me and my marriage. :)

I bought the V6 to keep my wife happy. My wife would only be happy with something that had better gas mileage than our old van....
I agree with keeping the wife happy, that's VERY important. :)
You do realize though that the Hemi gets very close to the same gas mileage as the V6 though? I understand one step at a time, I'm slowly working on my wife for an SRT-8. Probably will have to wait a few years, but I'll get there. ;)

At the time that we bought the Charger, I didn't fully know that or figure on how to play that to my advantage. But it's fine...I'm a patient man.
There were other deciding factors too...
Our new car had to be a 4 door, (Thank you DCX for making that work in my favor) She only liked the ones with hood scoops and spoilers, She wanted the MP3 jack in the stereo, leather seats, She didn't want to special order and the only one with a hood scoop besides the SRTs (which were way out of our price range) was this lone Black SXT.
All things considered it's been a real learning experience buying this Charger. She's now left the "Parental approval phase" and entered the "If they don't like it, they can go F'k themselves phase." And has basically sworn to only buy muscle/sports cars from now on...just to spite them.
...which of course is a bonus for me.

 Congrats on getting the wife into a muscle car! Just bear in mind that when you get the Hemi, she'll probably be "borrowing" it a lot. Or she'll decide she "needs" an SRT. The power is addicting.
With regard to her parental issues, hopefully she'll move past the "screw 'em" phase into doing things for herself instead of for or in spite of anyone else.
I've been very happy with my Dodge vehicles since I ditched my last Toyota and I've even talked my mom out of a Camry/Tacoma set up into a Durango/Dakota situation. Once she saw how happy I was with them and after I loaned her the Dakota for 3 months, she was hooked. :D
I remember about hrm, 10 years ago, when I had my first car (Toyota Tercel) that I thought Dodges were crap and the owners were stupid bullies. After a couple of years of less than pleasant experiences with Toyotas, I test drove a Durango and the rest is history. So you can chalk up the in-laws to ignorance and leave it at that. Most people I hear bad-mouthing Mopars either have NEVER driven one or had a friend who had a friend who had a really crappy one back during the early 80s.
As for higher gas prices, I'd rather pay more for gas than worry about whether or not I'd survive a bad accident or whether my car can stay in the same lane in heavy rain. :dead:
So good for you and your wife and if I haven't already said this, welcome to the family. :D

Okay.. thats better.. I"ll call off the hitman.
Now.. would be a good time to tell your wife the hemi actually GETS BETTER MPG then the v6 lol.. I was shocked as well.. but I pull 18-19 in the city and 30-32 on the hiway every day now.... I'm running a bit on the risky side tho with psi.. around 43 per tire... And we dont have a Lot of hills on the hiway but still.. when I had my v6 I was getting like 14mpg in the city and maby 25 max ont he hiway.
Ya, here we have to keep wife happy, but thats usually done by telling them how **** is gonna roll, and if they dont like it to hit the road:) Heehehehh
Ive long been of the opinion that since they decorate the house, we decorate the garage, and if they dont like it.. SUCK IT:)

Do you work in the deplomacy corps? :D
I've been married for quite some time, so yes, I am a DIPLOMAT. While I agree that it's important to "keep the wife happy" it's also important not to back down from your in-laws and standing up for yourself and what you believe in.
