BSO’s first four 2006 Dodge Charger patrol cars have been delivered, marked with a star and green & gold stripes, and will go into service on Friday. The cars are the first of a dozen Chargers ordered by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. The vehicles will be evaluated by the deputies who drive them and the technicians who maintain our fleet of patrol cars, comprised mostly of Ford Crown Victorias.
During the 1960s and 1970s, the Chrysler Corporation dominated the police car market. Then, in the ‘80s, the Chevrolet Caprice became the car of choice for most departments. In recent years, the Crown Vic gained prominence. Now many agencies are looking at the new Charger police package as an alternative to the Fords and Chevys.
The Chargers are equipped with a 5.7 liter HEMI V-8 engine that produces 340 horsepower. While more powerful than the Ford Crown Vic, the Charger actually gets better gas mileage. The combined city/highway EPA MPG for the Charger is 20 compared to 18 for the Ford. The rear-wheel-drive Chargers are also equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission, severe duty cooling system, a 160 mph calibrated speedometer, air conditioning, power windows in the front and inoperative windows for the rear seat passengers (a.k.a. prisoners), plus an easy to clean vinyl interior. With the full police package, the Chargers cost $28,900 each.
Media note: If you would like to arrange to get moving photos or video of the new marked units, please contact the Media Relations Unit prior to the 11 a.m. roll-out event. Photos are attached to this news release.
