Rapper 50 Cent says he wants to be the first to get a 2006 Dodge Charger, a four-door update on the muscle car that debuted at the North American International Auto Show last week. The car goes on sale this spring. Chrysler hopes for a marketing push from 50 Cent's interest.

http://www.detnews.com/pix/folios/dot.gif AUBURN HILLS -- It turns out Snoop Dogg isn't the only hip-hop artist who wants to see a new Chrysler in his garage.

Chart-topping rapper 50 Cent made clear last week he's impatient to get a 2006 Dodge Charger, a four-door update of the classic muscle car that debuted at the Detroit auto show last week and goes on sale this spring.

"I need to know what I gotta do to get that Dodge Charger first. I need that," the rapper told Myles Kovacs, publisher of auto customizing magazine Dub, in a telephone message made available to The Detroit News.

While some brands have been reluctant to receive the blessing of profanity-spewing hip-hop artists, DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group wants to broaden the appeal of its older-skewing Dodge and Chrysler brands.

Boldly styled vehicles such as the Chrysler 300 sedan and Dodge Magnum wagon made Chrysler the darling of the hip-hop world last year, providing ideal canvasses for oversize wheels and decked-out interiors that have become calling cards for rappers, pro athletes and -- perhaps most importantly for Chrysler -- the legions of fans who want to emulate them.

Chrysler is wasting no time getting 50 Cent what he needs, as it did last summer when platinum-selling rapper Snoop Dogg asked Chrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche for a Chrysler 300 sedan, a move that paid off in reams of publicity. The story of Snoop's affinity for the 300 was reprinted in dozens of newspapers and magazines, and the rapper featured a handful of Chrysler 300 sedans in a music video.

At this year's Detroit auto show, Ford Motor (javascript:companybox('F')) Co., Toyota Motor Co. (javascript:companybox('TM'))p. and General Motors Corp. (javascript:companybox('GM')) all are showcasing vehicles with street-racing accessories, fat wheel rims and special front grilles, underscoring the new attention they're giving to buyers who like to personalize vehicles and tune into TV shows such as MTV's "Pimp My Ride."

Americans spent a record $39 billion on customizing their vehicles in 2003, up almost 8 percent from 2002, according to the Specialty Equipment Market Association.

Rappers such as Snoop Dogg and Twista, both of whom added about $30,000 in extras to new Chrysler 300s last year, have helped fuel the accessories boom.

They also have given Chrysler "street cred" with a new set of buyers such as Chris Teague, a 36-year-old computer systems specialist from Waldorf, Md., who was checking out a tricked-out Dodge Magnum at the Detroit auto show on Monday. "This definitely gives me some ideas," he said.

Chrysler has been savvy about how they have approached the hip-hop community, letting the artists find them rather than chasing after endorsements, said Dub magazine's Kovacs.

"That's worth more money than any advertising you could do in the marketplace," he said.

But they've also launched vehicles whose design inspires car buyers who are tired of seeing Honda Accord look-alikes, he said. "It's all about being aspirational and cool," he said, "and Chrysler has found a way to tap into that."

Rarely in recent months has Chrysler missed an opportunity to mention that new models like the 300 are popular with everyone from senior citizens to Snoop Dogg. In accepting Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year Award in November, Zetsche even tried to imitate the language-bending rapper in describing the distinctive sedan with the low roofline and huge front grille. "As Snoop would say, 'It's the shizzle,'" Zetsche said.

Snoop Dogg left a phone message for Zetsche last summer, asking, "What I gotta do to get that brand new 300 up outta you?"

Chrysler responded by selling the rapper a 300, which he quickly spruced up with suede seats and scissor doors. The company allowed him to use several of the sedans for a music video from his new album. Rapper Nelly also has included a Dodge Magnum in a video, and NBA star Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets has posed on the cover of Dub with his outfitted Magnum.

Now Chrysler hopes 50 Cent will give the new Charger a push out of the gate. 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, grew up on the streets of Queens, New York, and promotes himself as an inveterate gangster. He has been shot nine times, including once in the face, and raps about hardscrabble street themes. He was once hailed by Detroit native Eminem as his favorite rapper, an endorsement that helped him to become one of the biggest figures in hip-hop music.

The 2006 Dodge Charger is an all-new passenger sedan that has the same rear-wheel-drive underbody as the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Magnum and revives the name of a two-door fastback perhaps best known as the getaway car on TV's "The Dukes of Hazzard." Chrysler will begin building the sedan in Brampton, Ontario, this spring.

Zetsche was already getting mileage out of 50 Cent's request at last Friday night's charity preview event for the 2005 North American International Auto Show. Surrounded on stage by models from Gear magazine, Zetsche bragged that 50 Cent bought a new Chrysler 300 last year and now is ready for the Charger.

"That's two 50 Cent purchases," Zetsche said. "Now, we're up to a buck."

The new Charger will not have street cred. The 300c yes. The Charger? No.

You show these guys buying these cars and tricking them out - they'll definitely sell. Just the fact that the design is so different from other sedans, and then add the power - it's a good combination. Even if purists don't like the design, it's still got a Camry beat by a mile.

Then you have these guys talking them up - that brings in a whole new audience.

I don't know that these will fly off the lots at the pace the 300 did, since this is kind of a redeux - but I bet they'll sell pretty darn well.

let it be known street cred comes from the streets not the studio.

And to be real about it, cats who are that influenced by fifty are not going to buy these cars, their going to take em. Have you peeped the song How to Rob? Anyone?? Now I pump fifty with no problem, but I want this car cause of the room and power. Not because a cat in the spotlight wants it. No Jedi mind tricks here. I got a wife, kid, and one on the way. I want to haul a$$ while hauling a$$. :D

hmm..I wonder how many 300's/ magnums were stolen last year :( , I was watching Unique Whips on speed the other day, and even they got took by someone who gave them a line and had them customize a stolen magnum.....It would seem there is that part of the population that enjoys customizing their rides, just as the population who wants to steal what they cannot afford...I hope this isn't the "street cred" DCx had in mind...

What a way to ruin a car,I mean to each his or her own ,but IMO,come on,a charger r/t as a pimp mobile?!! What's next-The SRT-8?!! Lord,I hope not!!The car is and always will be a american muscle car!!! To me ,the junk you put into it and on it to pimp it, to make it look like something that the heritage of the car was never meant to be,you just kill it,and it really doesn't look good at all!!! Way too GAWDY and overdone!!! What's next, take the charger nascars and pimp them all out,as their going around the track!! Boy that would sure look nice  ---NOT!!!!!!!!!!

BIGDEAL!!! Actually, its not about hate,as it is about how ridiculous an american muscle car looks pimped out!!! I'm still laughing,as it looks ugly like that, and I laugh at how alot of the younger ones follow, instead of lead!!Another true American Muscle CAR classic name destroyed!!! Chargers are not meant to be a pimp-mobile,they're called American Muscle Cars,as their hertiage of the name suggests!!! Oh well,to each his or her own though!! Maybe a raccoon tail hanging from your rear view mirror, would look appropiate in your pimp-mobiles!! :p

I saw a charger at the dealer yesterday with huge wheels on it... didnt look to see what size.... didnt care.... it looked stupid.... tires were just a rubber band wrapped on the rim... 1) doing that ruins the ride, 2) decreases the breaking ablility of the car and 3) make you look like a drug dealer with all the bling bling.... oh wait... now everyone is lazy, so it is just bling... not enough engergy to say the word twice anymore....

Go for a drive in a stock charger, then go for a drive in a charger that has 22's on it.... just from the ride alone... the stock one will win hands down....

dont get me wrong... I love custom rims... but would never go bigger then 18's on a car... I guess I just value my kidneys too much

ROFL, talk about double standards, add two doors its a great design that the gods should bow down to and give it a saint hood. Tint the windows , and add rims , and its the most unholy of things.

Whats this, do the car my way or i will cry like a baby day?

I didn't think it looked that bad, actually....pretty understated for a pimp-mobile IMO..not like some of the 300's I see with the Bentley grills and such...
This site proves once again...one man's beauty :slapper: is annother man's beast :hairy:

omg that is ugly, the stock wheels on the r/t are hot 18'' wheels thats all you need any wheels over 18'' go on trucks.

funny how they spend 10 grand on rims but never even opened the hood of the car.

i mean go molest jap cars like that not american cars.
im having 2nd guesses about buying this car now in fear of that i will have wanna be 50 cent "living in the hood" ***s screaming "LOOK THATS 50's CAR"
the same with excalades.

I'm worried about that too. I'm also worried the car will just be too popular in general. Living in a poor city and making good money will probably assure me that at least there won't be a lot of Chargers on my block, so to speak, but I'm buying the car because it's a muscle car, not because of "street cred."

For shame, kinda makes me wish it was a 2 door loud rusty tin can when I see people put nasty things like 40" rims on these.

I say f*** street cred, I hate 50 cent, he's a bigger turd than a '67 Imperial with a 4 banger in it.

When the 300 came out, I loved it...today I would never buy one because of poeple like snoop and .50 who make a public decree that it's time to sell the Escalade 'cause 'da 300 is 'da new ghetto cruise'a 'cause it's tite yo...
Why do I wan't a car that every ghetto thug will sweat...worse yet see it, car-jack it or, follow it home sometime and steal it! The Magnum shares some of this following but has a stronger draw to the skater/surfer/alternitive/punk rocker croud. I can deal with that. I truly hoped that of it's muscle car namesake and Dukes of Hazzard fame, the Charger would never gain this ghetto popularity of the 300, not to mention that the factory "bling" was left off of the Charger. Now, I'm begining to have my doubt's...is this the following DiamlerChrysler's marketing pro's want there products to have...I hope not. Myself, I prefer the VW Jetta/Golf/Cabrio target market...18-25 single, cute, spending daddy's money.

When you have 4 doors on a car that should have 2 this is what you get. The car has to have extras to make it look good based on the market rims, tint, etc. The car without rims is not that great on the eyes. Kinda like a girl in heels

I agree,as long as it goes along with the lines of the car----just not too big though, for my taste!! I think I'd stop at 20's.I think the tint also looks real cool on the charger. I know when they finally do release the charger srt-8,that's the one I'm waiting to buy,I'll be concentrating on performance mods mostly!!!

hell with all the crazy things people do to vehicles... you know it is only a matter of time until a charger is rolling down the road on 35" mudders... hehehe
