i took off the fuzzy crap under the rear speakers today, i thought some people might be interested in knowing whats there without having to do to the trouble. the roof is held in by about 6 pushpins like the one pictured below. you can see the subwoofer to the left of the right 6x9 (this is sound group II) theres a weird plug that goes into each of the speakers, but i dont know what its for, as when i disconnected the plug from the subwoofer, it kept playing...

wow, i didnt know there were three speakers in there. so what size speakers are they? and do you think a larger speaker could fit in place of these? in your opinion how much space or depth is there between the covering and the top the speakers are fastened to? sorry for all the questions, just thinking about doing a switch out. thanks ahead of time.

theyre 6x9s, and the sub is 8...
there arent many speakers bigger than 6x9s, but theres more than enough room to get pretty much any depth speaker you would want in there....

Anyone know the dimensions of the trunk offhand? I'd like to keep my 2 10"s and my amp, if I can...keep us updated on the progress jamphat.
Are you using the stock HU?

Looks like a 10" sub could be mounted under the back deck in place of the stock sub.
I know people have replaced the 6x9's but has anyone replaced the sub with an aftermarket and driven it with the stock amp?

Jamphat,
What sizes are the 7 speakers on sound group II and the location?
Is it 2-3.5" in dash, 2-6 1/2" in front door, 2-6x9 on rear panel(like pic) and the 8" sub in rear?
Do the rear doors have speakers in them?
thanks

I like the design for your box...
when i get my r/t i'm probably going to utilize the space to either side of the trunk, or go all out like i did once in my neon and put in a big ported box facing the seats :)
I dunno, I still have time to figure that part out... Looks good man

Really?
It looked like more than an inch outside the screws that hold the 8" in.
I was not talking about dropping them in just attaching them from the bottom.
Of course it's hard to tell from a picture There may not be as much room as it apears.
Of course you could make a mounting adaptor out of mdf board. It would hang lower in the trunk.
Would it be worth driving a 10" sub on the stock amp?

Cool, I guess I figured so much, but thanks for confirming.. That would be the sub amp then, so hopefully I can yank it and put a new, REAL, amp in there and it should still fit..
Nothing huge but, maybe 12"x9"x2" would work, like the Alpine MRD-M605..
The sub part is EASY I just have no idea where to put the amp. I could do back of rear seat, but I wouldn't know what to drill into or where..

...or save a lot of time and get a lot better punch and depth by purchasing Bazooka Tubes. They're round (side flex muddies the punch), are tuned to give the correct frequency, and are ported (fools speaker to think cabinet is larger than it is. More than 1/2 the sound is with cabinet tuning.

Ummm, yeeeeeah..
No bazooka's for me. And yes, I know some ppl on caraudioforum who will swear they win competitions with them. Fine, enjoy your bazookas. Not for me.
I want some serious bass, anyways, so even 2 bazooka 12"s which is the most that WOULD fit in the spare tire well, is not enough for me..
Anyways, I prefer component setups, and like the challenge.. :) Plus I need to sharpen my fiberglassing skills and the spare tire well is PERFECT for that.. :)

it is very easy to get more sound from the stock Kicker Sub, by replacing the stock amp with an aftermarket amp...you need to series the coils an use an amp that is 2 ohm stable mono. the pin outs on the connector for the sub are as follows
Pin 1 + coil one
Pin 2 - coil one
Pin 3 + coil two
Pin 4 - coil two
You just need to pull pin 2 and 3 and connect them together on the speaker side of the plug and now you have a single 2ohm circuit....I have tested this using a KX 400.1 and it really rocks.....

Here's a question to those of you that have replaced the rear 6x9s.
How much a difference does it make? Now if I fade to the back speakers they sound like poo by themselves. Will changing them out really make noticable difference?
Thanks,

Replacing the 6x9's will improve your overall listening experience. This was the first interior Mod I did (Besides tint). You do have to remove the entire rear deck. You also must remove screws from the C pillars, and the rear seat arm/shoulder rests. The shoulder rests are a pain in the ass the first time. Here is the secret. Remove the 10 mil bolt attached to the metal flange on the lower part of the pad. Then you must use a flat head screwdriver and press downward on the spring clip at the top of the pad. I sat in my car for about an hour trying not to break that metal spring clip. Once you get it, you'll never have that problem again. Like riding a bicycle...
Once you unscrew the C pillars (dont remove them, they hold the headliner in), and remove the shoulder rest and all the push fasteners, gently pull the cover forward. You may have to pry on the clip from inside the trunk to get started, and be careful not to tweek the cover too much. Once removed, break out your stubby phillips screw driver. And don't forget to dynamat.
I used Clif designs 6x9 and tons of dynamat and I'm really pleased. I've also managed to mount an Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1d to the rear deck (from underneath, not drop in) so I have super staging from the rear. The trick with the charger is to utilize the long front dash in keeping the soundstage in front of you. The rear 6x9's essentially are rear fill for me, but they sound great.
If you are a super audio guy, do yourself a favor and cut out the grill holes in your rear deck. the fuzzy crap does muggle the higher frequenty a bit. Good luck

It's super easy. A monkey could do it. You don't even need to pull it out of the deck, just disconnect that plug after removing that lower cover.

Oh, from the pictures I thought I wouldn't be able to get to the plug without taking the speaker out of the deck, and I can see from the way the screws are oriented that you have to go in from the top to unscrew the speakers from the deck. The picture shows one plug that is easy to get to, but the original poster said that yanking that didn't shut off the subwoofer. I can also see in the picture that there's another wire disappearing up on the left side of the subwoofer. Where exactly is the plug I want to disconnect?
The bottom of the rear deck is held in by 6 pushpins. How do you get those out? Just pull and they come right out? Maybe you have to wedge something in under the pin heads (ha!) to get them started?
One thing I'm always concerned about when taking something apart is being able to put it back together correctly (with no rattles or anything after it's together). I guess this would be hard to screw up, though -- just hold the bottom cover in place and push the pins back in.

Pushpins: Yup! Just pull/pry em out...they're pretty tough. They'll pop right back in too. No worries there. :)
As for the sub, disconnecting the plug from it WILL stop the speaker from playing anything, but there will of course be some output to the wire itself. This won't hurt anything. Only possible issue I can see comming from that is if the CANbus throws a code thinking that speaker is blown, but it shouldn't, if memory serves, blown speakers give off a high resistance, not a lack of resistance which is indicative of a disconnected speaker, not a blown one.

Sorry it took me a while to answer back.
Follow what "Creditunionguy" explained in his post, the only thing I can tell you is that right under where the seat belts lay on the rear seat there are one "V" shaped clips with tips at the end of them for both sides of the rear seat. All you need to do is push straight down on that V clip to allow it to come out from the slot it is in.
Once you do it once it is as easy as opening the car door itself.
I hope this helps.
Good luck

As I mentioned in another thread, today I took my Charger with Sound Group II to a dealer because it is way too bass-heavy and all the bass comes from the 6x9's in the door...almost none from the rear where the subwoofer is. The service manager told me that the subwoofer is in the front! What the hell? Is that middle speaker in the rear deck not a subwoofer after all? A subwoofer in the front doesn't make any sense though -- I would have to have two subwoofers, one for each door! That sounds frickin' crazy...at this point I don't believe the dealership.

The Boston system consists of 2 speakers in the dash, one 6 x 9 in each front door, two 6 x 9 speakers in the rear deck and a 8" woofer in the middle of the rear deck (optional) there is no subwoofer in the front (unless you want to call the front door speakers subwoofers. I have been told that the sub out put in the rear is not very loud because if it were cranked up it would cause the rear deck to rattle.....

So they compensated by routing all that bass through the door speakers? That's the root of my problem. Fading to the back and lowering the bass equalizer setting are not good options because, while they do mitigate the overpowering kick drums and whatnot, they also cause other elements such as bass guitar to fade almost entirely out. It seems I have to make a choice...bass drum that is way too loud but at least I can hear the bass guitar and other elements, or else sacrifice those elements in order to get the overpowering kicks under control. Either way, this sucks.

Nice. But if the problem is that the amp is only sending low signals to the door speakers, I'm not sure how swapping out speakers could make a significant difference? Unless maybe the Kickers just handle the signal a lot better? My lack of audio knowledge is showing here. :)
Would it make sense to replace the door speakers but leave the Bostons everywhere else? Or does this really require changing out all the speakers so that everything matches?

As for where you hear your bass coming from, your ear can not determine that. You can not hear the sound from the sub coming from a pin point location, your ear can just cant discern that. So you will always hear your bass coming from any speaker giving off higher frequencies. That is why you can hide a sub in a home theater system or with your computer speakers. Your ears will think the bass is coming from another speaker. I do however feel that the amount of bass to the door speakers is more than needed, but that my be due to less bass being sent to the sub. I dunno for sure.

All of the bass is coming from the front speakers. When I fade to the rears I only hear the 6x9's (which have no balls btw). You can't see the factory sub just by looking in the trunk...you would have to open up the liner at the top to reveal it. This thread originally had pictures of it but they are broken links now.
I went to an audio place because I was suspicious of my Charger's system as well, and he opened it up and I saw the subwoofer myself. So I know it's there. I just think the door speakers pump out so much bass (too much) on their own that it sorta makes the subwoofer irrelevant.
I've had my Charger over 2 years and while I've gotten used to the bass-heavy stereo to some extent, I'm still not 100% happy with it.

I agree that the door speaker kick out alot of bass. It is of my opinion that they have done this so they can lower the bass that is sent out to the sub to reduce rattle as it is in the rear deck, a place know to cause rattle with heavy bass. To solve this problem of the doors kicking out alot of bass I set my fader 3 points to the rear, lessing the levels sent to the front.
I hope this helps, there are my observations and opinions on the BA system in the Charger.

Yep, that's the conclusion I came to a few years ago. However, it doesn't really matter that much because the 6x9s in the doors have plenty of bass to make up for it. I have my bass turned down to about -2, my mid at 0, and my treble at +3, and then I have everything faded about 2 or 3 notches toward the rear, and I still have strong bass coming from the 6x9s. I think it's necessary to crank down the bass or else everything sounds muddy. It frustrated me for the longest time, but now I've gotten used to how it sounds and I actually miss the heavy bass when I'm in another car.
