Apparently they are releasing SW "updates" that actually kill a lockpicks functionality.......guess they are sick of us getting around all the BS restrictions.....AH is the release for the REC in question (kinda strange theres already an AH coming when AG just came out), and im sure they are coming for mygigs because all of a sudden theres a brand new 1.002 or something mygig release, when the 9.87 recently leaked from Harmon Kardon was the newest out to allow us 06/07 users to have working clocks

Hmmm, wonder if this is more about stopping illegal copying? And they figure if they remove the lockpick or inmotion hack, far fewer folks would copy the software?

Sorry, I'm not following what you're suggesting. Copy what software?

It's a federal law? My Garmin only shows a "careful using while driving" dialog that dismisses itself after a few seconds and goes to the map automatically. And the "safe mode" is a feature you can turn off in the options. Granted it's a Quest that's a few years old, but I assume the newer Garmins are the same way?

Seriously doubt it's federal law. The federal government rarely gets involved in vehicular law. That's why driver's licenses vary from state to state.

THE fed's cracked down hard in late 07 on this [inmotion dvd play/inmotion address input on nav] JUST ask unique auto sports-they got busted for it along with west coast custom's and this is were it started to get tuffer on us installers.
STATE & federal officers are doing spot checks on shop's for illegal window tinting/exhaust systems/inmotion video/air bag mod's/illegal painting
we got busted 3 times for tinting-once for 1% under the legal limit

BRO-ITS a federal law. or cars in some states would have inmotion nav and alpine and pioneer would ship there stuff to play dvd and entry of adderess right out the box.
SEMA is working with the feds so as not to band them all together.
AS a matter of fact-google sema and look up inmotion dvd play back under federal law [dept of motor saftey]

Might be a federal law to sell such a thing, but not to have such a thing. Cant say, since I cant fond any real reference to it, just forum posts saying it so, but real references.

All I found on there is the NHTSA is concerned and wants to continue to gather information. Several states have however already passed laws against it.
Whether it's federal law or not I don't think the government should be legislating what common sense tells me I shouldn't be doing (ie. watching a DVD and driving) however I see no reason why a passenger shouldn't be able to watch. Beyond this why shouldn't I be able to change a destination using voice commands? I've seen more dangerous people who simply were lost and cutting people off to get to where they want to go without any awareness of what's around them.
Guess the government isn't busy enough trying to fight terrorism or save the economy that they have to go after all the dangerous people trying to use their navigation to get where they want to go. :driving:

I tried the new 1.220 firmware for the mygig. It didn't disable my lockpick, but It broke the clock that 9.897 fixed. Too bad cuz 1.220 seemed a bit snappier and fixed the caller id to show your phone book entry and not the phone number.

From what I understand they have. They just want you to pay $199 a pop for it.

Thanks for getting the thread back on track. I don't think that it has been substanciated that the newer updates are targeted at disabling the lockpick. All of this is rumor based on a post on another forum where somebody knows someone that works at Navteq and says they are trying to disable the lockpicks and other hacks. I can see them wanting to go after the software hacks as this is in direct violation of their copyright and can cause instability or issues that they would be blamed for even though their code has been changed without their permission. The lockpick hardware however would likely be much more of a challenge for them to disable as it is basically overriding the signal coming from the CAN system in the car. I don't think they would really want to expend the effort that it would take to disable a hardware override like the lockpick. It's not violating their copyright nor would they be ultimately liable for it's use since it clearly is external to their software and meant to override their built in "safety" features.
Anyway, I'm glad to hear that the latest firmware didn't kill the lockpick. What is the clock bug anyway? I haven't received my RER receiver yet but it should be here by the weekend. I've only had the car for a week.

Does anyone know whether the GPS speed lockout is caused by the software or is it the hardware itself? I asked this question of Navteq and they said that it is a "feature" installed by the manufacturer (Alpine). I wonder if there is a wire on the connector that provides the speed information and whether it could be cut without disabling anything else.

The lockout is done through software. I'm pretty sure that if you cut anything you'll at least reduce the accuracy of the nav system, possibly disable it due to a missing input.

According to the MyGIG documentation:
Certain state laws mandate that the Front Seat Video feature, on vehicles so equipped, be disengaged prior to vehicle delivery.
Vehicles equipped with the Front Seat Video ‘My GIG’ feature (sales codes RER, REN, REU), and delivered to the following states, must have the Front Seat Video feature disengaged during the New Vehicle Prep process, using the StarSCAN tool:
Connecticut
Florida
Illinois
Kansas
Michigan
New Mexico
Nevada
Oklahoma
Oregon
Pennsylvania
Tennessee
Texas
Maryland
Utah
Wyoming
If it was federal law, then every state would be forced to to disengage the front video.

That was my point as well. Unfortunate for me I happen to live in one of the states on the list.
Either way, the whole original topic of this threat seems at least currently to be untrue. As of the latest firmware release the lockpick is still working just fine. It would appear to be very difficult and costly for them to add code to their firmware to defeat devices like the lockpick. And lets face it, companies do not do things that are difficult and costly without any benefit to them without being forced to and as of right now they comply with the states that have laws against these features buy allowing a way for them to be disabled.

Seriously....really....that was just said.... They can't sell it in a new car, what you do aftermarket is totally up to you. Do you know how many DVD flip out head units there are... do you know how easy it is to not hook up the speedo control if there even is one on any of those.... come on dude. With sound security as your screen name I expect more...
Why else would you have an in-dash flip out screen DVD head unit but to watch movies in motion... and those dash-top nav screens.... ummmm..... no motion restriction, just a warning screen. Remember, we don't think it's retarded because we want to recline our seats all the way back, set the cruise, crack a beer and watch a movie. We want to be in the passenger seat with the wife driving while we do the above... (some states-no beer, you get the drift) The aftermarket people take into consideration the passenger... This POS head-unit does not. They treat the driver like he's 3 (yet you can search through your entire music collection using way more attention and button presses on the mygig while in motion but you have to pull over to figure out where to pull over and get gas...) RETARDED!!!!!
